Default Clutch Job

Hello all,

I am about to do my first clutch on a 911. It's a 1986 Carrera Targa. I would also like to replace the synchromesh rings. Everyone says to pull the engine. Why can't I just drop the transaxle?

Thanks!

Perry

Because it is pinned in place behind the engine.

GTgears, thanks for responding.

You mean Pinned in front of the engine? Pinned how? Even with the engine out, how do you then remove the transaxle?

I mean the studs holding the engine and gearbox are too long to push the gearbox forward and off them. Plus the shift rod extends into the tunnel. So you drop gearbox and engine together as an assembly. Then you split them on the ground. Lets you seal top engine leaks at the same time and do some detail work.

If you want to just drop the engine you can. The clutch will stay on the engine. But if you are going to do synchros in the box there is no point. It is a few hours at a casual pace. When I did it often i could do it in an hour with a lift.

I'm going through something similar with an 88 (different transmission). I dropped the whole thing. It gave me a chance to do other things. Be careful, the 'while you're in there' list gets expensive real quick. Seals, fuel lines, brake lines, suspension bushings, engine mounts, flapper boxes, clutch fork, bearings, oil tubes.....etc.

Thanks to all that replied. I'll get started soon and I'm sure I'll be back with many more questions as the job progresses.

If you don’t have any manuals buy a copy of WAYNE Dempsey’s 101 projects book. It has enough detail to get you through the job.

The car spent a few years with me in a place called Newfoundland and now it's still with me in Halifax. It's currently in pieces in my garage getting the clutch changed among other things just like the OP.
