Motor Options for 1982 911 SC Rolling Shell
Hey Guys,
I'm looking at a potential project car, I found a 1982 SC Rolling Chassis. I don't know alot about air cooled Porsches, I currently drive a 997.1 Turbo (manual)and a F430 (manual). I drove a couple air cooled Porsches over the last few years which is a great car, so now I want one.
I'm wondering what my engine & transmission options are?
Please let me know!

The air cooled car world is pretty new to me, I'm looking to see what I can get for $10k to $30k would be my budget since I don't know how often I would actually drive this car. The rolling chassis I found has new paint, and listed at a price that makes sense for a potential project for me. So I am trying to do a bit a research and asking for knowledge from the community.

How much of the work are you going to do yourself? A used engine/gearbox is probably going to cost you $10K to $15K. If the car needs suspension work, you can easily spend another $2K. Interior gutted? Used interior with seats $2K-$3K. Does it have its wiring harness?
Maybe another $4K for miscellaneous (brakes, fuel lines, electrical repairs, tires).
So you could easily be in this for $20K-$25K in parts, and if you can't do this work yourself, you've blown the budget pretty quickly.
If you can spend in the $30K range, you might be better off looking for a decent 911SC or mid-year (1974-1977) that is already well sorted. Although I think a lot of those cars are going to be a bit over that number.
I don't mean to be too discouraging, but I think you'll find the dollars are going to add up fast.

For an '82 SC
any 915 from '76 thru '86 will work and bolt right in, there are some differences in gearing and other internals that would point you to a specific transmission depending on the motor its' mated to.
For instance a slightly breathed on 993 3.6 which is a very torquey motor would be happiest w/ a later '85 or '86 915/67or 68 trans, possibly w/ a cooler(depends on usage). Later g50s though very nice aren't a real easy fir in the earlier (pre '87) chassis.
A less torquey 3 liter cis motor would be happier w/ a shorter geared '76 915/44
ZF lsd is a plus in any of these transmissions
motors from 3. 0 to 4.0 can be fitted but beyond a little breathed on 9993 3.6 trans reliability is increasingly iffy. I has a 993 RS( 3.8/300hp) in my '76 w/ the most robust 915 that came down the line(915/67), this motor was too much for the trans in the lower gears, went back to a lightly modified 993 3.6 & 915/67 all is well.
any of 3 thru 3.6 motors work well, the bigger the motor the more fun and more expensive it gets. A 3.2 is a nice intermediate motor.
