Why do some 3.2's have stone guards infront of the rear arches and others don't?
Mine hasn't got them, should I fit them for protection, or are they more of a cosmetic cosmetic thing?

Not sure what is available where you are, but here in Alberta (where they sand the roads in winter) you can get a clear film that is applied like tape over the painted surface. It's commonly used on painted bumpers, the lower 6" of hood, and forward surface of the mirrors. Many dealers install it on new vehicles, and until you get close it's hard to see it. It would probably work well on the forward side of the rear fenders.

Mark,
The stuff to look into is Armourfend. It's what new cars get at the dealer. Many high end body shops can apply it. Like Paul said, it can be applied to many high damage areas for protection.

Thanks guys. That sounds very interesting. I don't think I have seen that of here in Blighty. Perhaps some other UK lister can confirm/deny that it is available over here?
I will look into it.

Mark,
If I remember correctly, they came as an option on some cars. I believe they serve both purposes, help protect and cosmetic. You can order therm from several places, i.e., Pelican Parts, Vertex Auto, etc

Yes, Armourfend are in the UK:
http://www.armourfend.com/
My 968 cost about £350 for the works - front plastics, wings, lower bonnet and all lights. That was supply-and-fit at their depot.
I'm currently debating whether or not to fit it to my 911. On the plus side, it definitely stops many stone-chips. On the minus side, it doesn't stop everything, and the plastic itself can start to look tatty after a while where it's been hit. It also makes polishing the car difficult as you get two different finishes.
