Default Engine no turn da wheels - place your bets (and the winners are...)

1989 manual NA non LSD 2.7L 944:-

There I was, new cam belt, new water pump, new discs and rotors, new-ish CV joints, lovely starlit night, just cruising along, and the Porsche Gods figured all was too good.

So they made my car make a loud bang and disconnected the engine thing at the front from the wheels things at the back. No drive in any gears, clutch feels normal, maybe a small odd noise in 3rd and 4th but 1st, 2nd and reverse all silent with engine running, albeit with no drive.

So the car is parked on ther side of the road, too dark to see under. But no half shafts dangling at odd angles. I'll flatbed it home tomorrow and put it up on the hoist.

In the meantime what do the learned ones reckon?
- Broken central shaft (ie torque tube shaft)?
- Disconnected central shaft (bolts sheared etc, clamp loose)?
- Clutch disentegrated (unlikey - feels normal)?
- Gearbox input shaft snapped (is this like a 928 where 5th gear is the input shaft)?
- Other?

Any opinions welcome - I'll post the news when I get to spend time under it early next week.

Looking foreward to your posts,

Dave

Talking

Could be (A) on your shift linkage couple to the shifter rod coming from inside the car,if it is there is a lock on it. Make sure you lock it back.GL

+1 CV Joint

They (generally) won't dangle when they break.. Just raise the rear end; put the car in gear; and spin the rear wheels. Likely one of the axles will turn without turning the transmission..

944online has NEW aftermarket ones for $130/axle. I just replaced both of mine last week or so.

I'd have to go with the CV joint also, had the same thing happen after 5k on new joints, bolts broke, search on here theres there plenty of tails of woe, but cheaper than a new tranny.

it's not the shift linkage, if you were driving on the highway you'd still have power to the ground, just no way to shift, i've had it happen.

no clunking from the rear? usually when a cv goes there's some kind of clunking. and i'm not really sure how a cv going would cause a car not to move. if youre driveshaft let go...you'd hear it clunk in the tunnel till it stopped.

best guess, clutch, mine went and felt normal not even 100ft earlier

Hi all,

early morning here so just checked in, thanks for the suggestions. Yes I'm hoping its a CV, but I had new Cv joints fitted less than 1,000 kms ago (well, at least I paid to have this done...). Clutch still feels normal. Gearshift still feels normal. Funny thing, this happened on just the same stretch of road where my 928 broke its central shaft some years ago. :-) :-)

Cheers

All those who said the words 'CV' - the CV's themselves I think are OK, but the company that did the job can't have tightened up the hex head bolts properly, and one shaft had come completely off the side of the transmission. All bolts still poking through the CV - just not into the receiving part.

Should just be a matter to bolt it back together - properly this time.

Cheers

The bolts are a TTY bolt so they need to be replaced every time. What happened to me on my way home with my new 944. You can either take the bolts and drill the heads for safety wire or get some stage 8 bolts.

TTY@30FtLBS with no proof torque or stretch gauge after torquing?

Here is a little tidbit regarding TTY bolts.. I get mildly upset every time I read this on here.. The CV bolts are NOT TTY... not even the head studs are TTY...
