Default Spyder RS initial concerns

Hi guys

I’m doing European delivery of an SRS right now and wanted to ask if some of what I’m experiencing has been experienced by other new SRS owners particularly those who already did European delivery or have taken long trips with luggage in their SRS in North America.

1- Both the frunk and trunk are damn hot. Glass water bottles left in the frunk/trunk are uncomfortably hot to handle even if in the rear of the trunk. Almost tea temperature.

I know the frunk runs hot in GT cars. My 991.2 GT3 frunk was fairly hot but I don’t remember it being hot enough to literally cook/burn carrots. See attached carrot photo from today.

Not a GT car, but I don’t remember my old Boxsters trunk being anywhere near this warm. Even items placed in the far rear of the trunk (away from engine) are much warmer than I would expect.

2- Both my and my girlfriend’s iphone overheats after being plugged into the center console and we both get messages that our phones are too hot to accept a charge. Wired carplay does work…for now. Since the SRS only has wired not wireless CarPlay, I’m worried I will trash my iPhone if I regularly plug it into the center console for navigation.

Otherwise the SRS looks, drives, and sounds great! But I’m worried a bit about #1 and #2 and I hope to learn if these issues affect other new SRS owners or not?

Thanks

PS- what oil and radiator temps do SRS owners see after an hour of freeway driving? Not hard backroads or track driving, just driving at highway speeds for 1-2 hours, in low to mid 80s temperatures.

Get a wireless CarPlay adapter to at least cover that one issue. This is the one I'm using https://a.co/d/9qNpDjY which has a coupon on it right now.

This is no different from what I experienced in my 718 Spyder, exactly.

We drove 1000 miles each way to Parade few years back. Both front back packed. Bourbon in either location too hot to drink at the end of the day. Radiators up front and enclosed engine compartment in back.

Phone, same thing. I don’t put it in the center console anymore. 3 ft cable I tuck it in the passenger net. Besides heat, kinda a contortionist movement to get the phone in the console anyway.

Small cooler with reusable ice packs for food and drinks maybe?

Crazy that the frunk gets that hot. I've had four GT cars previously, and none got that hot.

As for the phone, that mirrors my experience with most wireless chargers in cars. On warm days, our phones will get that same overheating message when charging wirelessly in our Tesla.

I cant speak for the frunk or trunk as i'll be honest i never really experienced this with my GT4. Did a few drives up to Thunderhill and other drives down to Monterey and never had an issue with my water or food getting cooked.

As far as the phone getting hot, thats quite normal for charging in cars. This is largely due to the fact that you are also bluetooth connected to the car AND running Apple CarPlay at the same time. If anything, running CarPlay/Android Auto is actually what really heats phones up. The charging just exacerbates that issue. Basically it boils down to how many things the phone is attempting to do. In a modern car, its charging, looking for GPS signal, looking for cell data signal, looking for cell service signal (this things are different nowadays), connecting to bluetooth in your car, playing music to your car, while doing everything else that your phone normally does when you just have it in your pocket. Active Location services are the biggest resource drain for devices. And keep in mind, you dont even need to have directions active on CarPlay. just having that app open on your PCM is enough to overwork the device.

As others said, the frunk in the Spyder always gets quite warm. And it seems the SRS has even more heat that it puts off. But interestingly, average oil and water temps are much lower in my SRS compared to my Spyder. 80-90C vs. 100-110C. Maybe it's all going into the frunk...

You car is hot. Literally. Damn!
I recently transported 2 cases of cold beer in the trunk of my Boxster 25 which was a two and half hour drive home from the brewery. The beer was still cold.
As for the phone, I just leave it out. It used to heat up in my 911 and now the Boxster as well. No ventilation in that shallow arm rest.
Specialty car not meant for general use is what I conclude.

My 4RS frunk is super hot as well. The front radiator vents over the top of hood, so I get why it's hot. However, maybe because the hood is made of carbon fiber is why it gets extra hot in there?

I'm thinking about carrying a Yeti soft cooler in the frunk to keep my things at a normal temperature.

Wireless CarPlay: I have this one in both the 4RS and RAV4 and its worked well for me:

Amazon Amazon

I haven't noticed any excessive heat in my frunk so I'll have to be wary of that. Mine came with the Porsche tub liner, not sure if that helps.

The higher temps in the Spyder were due to emissions. Of course you probably noticed the estat open under stress and bring the water temp way down in seconds.

You paid a gas guzzler tax if in US so expect they tuned the cooling differently to handle the cup motor.

Yeah, I noticed the much different temps in the RS first time in it.

Pictures of the car needed to verify that is what cooked your carrots. Have a great trip!
