I’ve been in the process of doing this and having a hard time deciding. Looking only at cars with LWB, manual transmission. The Spyder in the Bordeaux interior and matching top just look like they’ll age so gracefully. No plans to track. Will purely be a weekend toy and occasional driver to work on nice light days. How many of you cross shopped both and decided over one or the other?
I crossed shopped 4RS and SRS and decided on SRS even though the ADM is higher.
Between GT4 and Spyder I would also pick Spyder. A manual Spyder is bascially my choice if the stock market didn't come back.
My take is that GT3 is "rigged" to be faster than GT4, 911 people are always gonna nick pick the suspension, turn in, whatever excuse they can find to justy their worse engine layout.
But only thing comparable to a spyder is a speedster, which, in my opinion, looks worse and is just a tad too fat to be a sexy roadster.

Porsche keeps a pretty strict order and the same engine in the Cayman compared to the 911 has always been tuned a bit lower. We're lucky they put the GT3 engine in the SRS/GT4RS, but still kept the manual option exclusive to the GT3.

I think the big difference is that the Boxster came first and then the Cayman while the 911 came first and then the Cabriolet. The 911 Cab has always had a bubble butt problem due to the engine placement.
Another thing to note, may not apply to most. The GT4/Cayman based variants have a top tether point to put in a child seat. Spyder/Boxster variants do not.
If there's no young kids involved, then it's a non issue.
To me they are completely different experiences, you either want a coupe or a convertible...
Well said.
And for me, Porsche does not make a convertible that I find attractive. I know I’m in the minority, but for me…the lines of all their convertibles (whether 911 or Cayman variant) are not elegant (top up or down - doesn’t matter to my eye). The convertible interrupts the line, and I don’t like the “humps” on the Spyder.
I think Porsche makes some of the most beautiful coupes available (whether 911 or Cayman variant).
The only thing of importance is whether you love the car you bought. To each their own.

Porsche made the Boxster first before putting a top on it and calling it the Cayman. I don't think any convertible looks good with the top on, but I think the Spyder looks great with the top down and the SRS even more so and I was never a convertible person.

people are definitely different… I personally found Boxster to look much better than Caymen. I think with the roof painted like body color it is just a bit boring and the rear looks too “humpy”. 992 series added a lot of visual elements to help with that.

I did not know this! Thankyou for mentioning this. It is important since I have a toddler that loves going for car rides.
Besides all the good input above, in the GT4 you're inside with the motor all the time. When I drove them I found I heard more of the injector tick, valve noise, etc. and less of the exhaust and induction. In the Spyder I got more of the sounds I wanted. YMMV.
For me, it all came down to purpose. If it was a track weapon, GT4. But for a fun weekend ripper, Spyder fits the bill more for me.
