While I respect your opinion, I can’t say I share the same feeling towards the A052, given the firsthand feedback I’ve gotten from my fellow track buddies in both the GT4 RS and GT4–all on OEM suspension. Quite a few skilled folks putting in very fast laps across varying tracks—lots of positive feedback on the tire with the only drawback being that it starts to lose time (not composure) after a handful of laps in a given session. It’s a true time attack tire. I would recommend it to any GT4 or RS owner looking for a very fast track tire that’s willing to give up some longevity for outright pace.

I love that we have options, with each tire having its unique characteristics and tradeoffs. I’ve found it enjoyable to learn how to get the most out of each tire while pushing for the fastest times I can. We can all have different preferences that suit our driving style and abilities.

Best of luck with your journey in dialing in your setup to your liking. We’re blessed with so many good tracks here in NorCal. Even one or two days a year can be a great way to learn and satisfy the itch. And the per diem insurance for the GT4 is much more affordable than the RS. But we do all enjoy our cars in our own way. Have fun and be safe!

I was at Road America and the tread on my rear tire (driver's side) blew out going down the main straight. I got it on a lift and the front tire is also showing cords on the inside edge as well. The passenger-side tires look fine. I am running Michelin PS4S which still have a lot of life left (measured at 6/32nds). I installed TPC toe links and the tech I used aligned the suspension shy of TPC's least aggressive setting about 2 weeks ago. I don't know much about alignment so wondering if this is a case of bad alignment or just bad luck from this specific track.

This looks like a tire issue more than alignment or track. PS4S is a great tire but isnt really recommended for high speed track use. If you are going to the track often I would get a set of Apex rims (19") and some dedicated track tires which you can also use on the street.

PS4S are famous for chunking off tread when run hard on track.

I agree, PS4's aren't great for track use. I experienced chunking (991.2), not necessarily the cording you experienced.
What kind of lap times were you running at Road America?

Low 2:40s which I don’t think was that fast of a time. I wasn’t pushing that hard.

I have PCCBs, so no 19s for me. I am in between getting a dedicated set of Cup 2s and rims or replacing my PS4S with Cup 2s. I only go to the track 2-3 times per year. The rest of my driving is local or backroad driving (i.e. Tail of the Dragon).

There’re better options, at lower costs than the Cups. Ironically I had my first track sessions back in April using MPS4s (40* temps), beginner/novice as it was my first time on track. I was pushing the car to the best of my abilities, and didn’t see any uneven wear. I had a set of Cups sitting in the garage with 7/32nds on them, and decided to get them installed today (wasn’t going to get much on the used market value wise) for an upcoming track event (3 Day, ~10+ sessions). The MPS4s will be shelved until the track season is over, then they will go back on.

With regards to your alignment, it’s not too far off stock specs; I’d be shocked if you could even feel a difference with those specs.. Even if you see 80% street use, I’d suggest you get more camber all around, toe rear looks good for your use case, fronts could be dialed in closer to 0 Toe. Im currently running -2.3F/-1.8R, ~0 Toe Front/ 2* total Rear. This was achieved using stock internals + shims. The car feels 1000% more planted, even on the street. My use is 50/50 track/street.

I see no reason for you to drop 5-6K on new wheels and tires, unless you wanted another set for aesthetics. There are plenty of options for dual purpose use out there, and some more to come as brands are starting to include more stock 20” sizes. For the price of a new set of wheels and tires, you’d be in the ballpark of just buying a new set of tires only + an exhaust system (if you don’t already have one) - you’d probably get more thrill out of this combo, just my .02

That drivers rear is strange. As mentioned 4S isn't the best for track but usually chunk not wear like that. I doubt it, but nothing was rubbing against that tire? Tracking becomes expensive, fast, unfortunately. Brake pads, rotors, tires, and gas.... I quickly realized that after a few trips to RA, and it moved me to get track specific gear that could be swapped relatively easily. Essentially track pads and extra set of wheels and then track specific tires. Using street based consumables just resulted in more compromises than I was happy with, like the tire wear you experienced. Slippery slope for sure.

No tire expert here either, but I do have experience with the PS4S tires on track and wearing them down completely (and consistently) across the rears. If it were me, I'd want to get the alignment rechecked - that doesn't look like anything I've seen before. I suppose there's always a chance it was a tire manufacturing defect too, but that's pretty low (but not zero) probability with Michelin.

I'm currently running Cup2 tires, but looking forward to getting back to the PS4S tires since I only do a couple track days a year (typically 4-5 DE days). The PS4S tires are so much better on the street, and imho are also better AutoX tires than the Cup2. I have a lot of DE days under my belt, but don't drive beyond 8/10th's at the track in this car because I'm just there to have fun, learn a little, and (hopefully) drive home in the same condition the car showed up in.

Be sure to let us know if you find anything amiss!

I am the same way. 2-3 DE a year and I don't push too hard since I want to drive home and I don't want to go through consumables at a rapid pace. Just a place to open the car up and have some fun. I am going to have the alignment rechecked when the new tires go on.

I finally ordered the Yoko AD09s from TR today. Getting them heat cycled, and their first outing will be at Sonoma in three weeks for three days.

Will try to keep them in the low 30s psi, and will see how it goes.

I currently run the RT660s in 265/305 on Apex 19" wheels
  • Front Wheel Size: 19x9" ET50
  • Rear Wheel Size: 19x11" ET46
and was thinking of trying the R71rs in the same size on the Apex 19s.
Seems Apex's recommendation is
  • Front Tire Size: 255/35-19
  • Rear Tire Size: 285/35-19

But have any of ya'll ran the R71rs in 265/305 on Apex 19" wheels?
Seems based on the section/tread width specs on Tire Rack that it could work :thinking?

Have any of ya'll been able to fit sizes greater than 265 in front and 305 in rear on any 19" wheels? For example 275/315?
