Default Question on GT gears - regear for GT4?

Sent this note to Matt, have been unsuccessful in getting a response. Was wondering I’d anyone here would weigh in?

Hello,

I was looking to have a couple of questions answered before I make a decision. I have a 22 GT4 and am interested in re-gearing my manual transmission. Here are the ratios I believe you have available:

Guard:
1st 3.31
2nd 2.25
3rd 1.55 1.579
4th 1.286
5th 1.083

My questions are:
  • Do you have a 3rd gears ratio that is slightly shorter (maybe 1.65 or so) as with the 1.579 there is a fairly larger gap between your 2.25 2nd (I like this second gear) and 3rd. Also same question on 4th, as it is fairly close to 5th.
  • What is your availability of these gears in general, and the main shaft 1-2 in particular? I may plan this for the winter and would like to know if you anticipate you would run out of stock or how often you reorder?
  • This will be for a street car, I assume these are not straight cut gears - how is the gear whine/noise? Are all the gears cut the same?
  • I currently have second gear crunch with stock gears, this has been a common issue from the factory. Do you know if any of your customers complain of any like symptoms after install?
  • Do you warranty the parts?

Thanks - again much appreciated.

second; who is Matt? Farrah? Why would you be emailing him asking Matt if “you have available”? He is a customer, not the shop doing the work; you really aren’t aware of that? He has has spoken about them and recorded with the owner multiple times now. Call Deman.

This is ridiculous right, this is trolling?

Uhh...

I believe this guy is asking about a different gearset than the DeMan gears...

Matt Monson is the guy who runs Guard Transmission.

Take it down a notch.

OP, I run the DeMan set currently and ran the Holinger set previously so can't help with your questions unfortunately. I can wholeheartedly recommend the DeMan set, though (no gear whine or second gear crunch from this set btw).

You probably best to go via a re-seller of GT gears such as BGB or Sharkwerks. GT is the manufacturer. Reach out to @user1029 as he has GT gears.

GT make the following, but not all ratios always are available:
2nd 2.25
3rd 1.55 1.60 1.579 1.526
4th 1.286 1.333 1.24 1.20
5th 1.083 1.10 1.04 1.00

Their gears are not straight-cut, but have a 'motorsport' tooth profile, so may be a bit louder than OEM. Conversations with some others, report no noticeable noise increase.

I believe GT warranty is 3 years.

Let's try not to turn this thread into a another GEAR WAR thread !!!

Hello,

We offer the following ratio set, in my opinion and the very many who have driven and own these ratios they are perfect.

In my opinion the 2.25 second is too short.. and creates a continued problem up the line all the way to 5th. Have a look at the attached chart and see the ratios.

In stock and ready to ship. Feel free to Contact DeMan Motorsport with questions or details rick@demanmotorsport.com

Here is a comparison of the 2 main offerings (DeMan and Guard). As GT does offer other ratios for 3rd-5th, you could play around with the ratios a bit. Other options are KMP gears in Europe.

I'd like to know this also.

Edit: Or even just the final drive gears; 4.17 from the GT4's 3.62. Hell, even the manual GT4's 3.89 would be an improvement IMHO.

Does Sharkwerks still do these gearboxes or was that more the 981 GT4? Is it more or less pretty similar? Anyone know what they use?

Sharkwerkes are very helpful and sell GT gears. 981 & 982 use same gearsets.

They are using my gears. The exact ratios varies with application and usage. I think that’s also the source of some of the confusion regarding what ratios we offer.

We didn’t do the mainshafts at first. I still maintain that for a racecar or track only application, from a performance standpoint a shorter 2nd gear just isn’t needed. We never used one when racing them in IMSA as your slowest corners still have you right in the meat of the power band and ready to accelerate back out.

So the first building of the Sharkwerks GT4 “RS” back in 2016 got the then available 1.579, 1.286, 1.083 package. Then demand from the street tuner market really wanted a shorter 2nd. Everyone was going on about how 2nd was just too tall for having fun on backroads and around town.

That resulted in the 2.25 second gear mainshaft kit and the shorter 1.600 3rd gear being released in 2018. However, since they already had a 3-4-5 kit, they opted to just skip the shorter 3rd and do the mainshaft. And since a lot of press and customers drove the car, they said they wanted EXACTLY what was in the car, even if it wasn’t fully optimized.

unfortunately not. The architecture and design of the two gearboxes is not at all alike.
