Default trickle charging

i have the dealer provided trickle charger. I use the cigarettes' lighter option. It had been working fine but it failed causing a dead or sleeping battery. I woke up battery and remembered about the footwell charging port seemed to work well for 4 days. Once again it stopped working with the the power light on flashing indicating a fault. is there any suggestions for me to trouble shoot?

As a side bar; i love my car. I am not as sophisticated as many of you but i know a good thing when i have one. I continue to enjoy the forum

"I am not as sophisticated as many of you"
I don't buy that for a second!

Only a polished space explorer would say such a thing!

Ok - I'd start with a new battery tender. The one from the dealer may have gone bad. I'd invest in a good quality charger if you store the car each year. I personally use a battery tender vs "trickle charger" if there's any difference.
I personally like to clip directly onto the battery terminals instead of through the cigarette lighter port.

BTW - this is just my experience with storing various different vehicles over the years. I don't own the Spyder yet.

Good advice ..... I never liked the cig lighter footwell charging method .... Charging lead connected directly to the battery is the way to go .... Just get yourself a " Battery Tender Brand " charger . They are inexpensive and they work very well and have a good warranty if they fail.

You may have a bad charger or bad connection or a very drained battery or a blown fuse on the charger (if it has one) .... all of which can cause a flashing fault light. If your battery is really low you will get a flashing fault light on the charger meaning the battery is too low to charge .... This does not mean your charger is bad. You need to charge the battery back up with a proper conventional battery charger and then put it back on your maintainer charger and if the fault light eventually comes on again this may indicate your battery is on the way out as they don't like to be run dead more than a few times .

Use that same setup in the center console 12v socket without issue as well.

I also use the CTEK all winter with the cigarette lighter port. Works perfectly.

I have the same battery maintainer with the same cigarette adaptor and plug it into the footwell with zero problems. No issues with needing to lock or keep unlocked, or maintainer working and then not working, or anything. I actually have one for another car that I use the alligator clips on and no problems with that car either.

Suncoast website selling charger says car should be locked. Not sure if that mattered in your case.

https://www.suncoastparts.com/product/CHARGER2.html

I lock mine and it seemed OK for now.

I just plug it in the footwell.

Maybe this thread would be helpful - several of us having issues with the Porsche branded Lithium charger (Does the GT4 RS use Li-Ion battery too?):

Exclamation

@space man If you are sure that your Porsche branded CTEK trickle charger is not faulty.
  1. Do not remove key from ignition after turning off engine.
  2. Plug in trickle charger into 12V socket.
  3. Check trickle charger is lit and charging.
  4. Remove key from ignition.
  5. Lock door.

FWIW, I tried all these kinds of suggestions and never got it to be highly reliable. I switched to going direct to the battery via the frunk, and I’ve never had a problem since. I also find it easier to setup.

Someone in the a separate thread recommended a charger that sends you messages on your phone if charging fails. I forget the name, but if you aren’t going direct to the battery, that might also help.

I guess user experiences vary . . . I have Porsche trickle charger and use it whenever I am out of town. Plug it into passenger footwell socket. Works like a charm every time. I follow directions. 1. Plug into car socket first. 2. Then into wall socket second. 3. Choose battery type on charger. 4. Lock doors on car. Maybe the lock car doors is more important than given credit? Not sure because I have never not locked the doors.

@space man You didn't mention what trickle charger you were suing, but if you are going to buy a replacement, I recommend the CTEK MXS 5.0
Amazon.com: CTEK - 40-206 MXS 5.0 Fully Automatic 4.3 amp Battery Charger and Maintainer 12V : Automotive Amazon.com: CTEK - 40-206 MXS 5.0 Fully Automatic 4.3 amp Battery Charger and Maintainer 12V : Automotive

I have this CTEK (MXS 5.0) and 2 others, older CTEK maintainer's, always use the console Cig-plug and never lock the doors, they have never failed to stay connected and keep the battery charged, going on 10+ years now.
