Personal opinion on 718 vs 918 manuals, also, difficulty shifting into 1st?
Hello there!
I own a Boxster GTS 4.0, manual, today test drove a 992 C2S, manual. To my surprise, those 2 transmissions are quire different in feel, but no so much in gear ratios.
C2S clutch is waaay more springy, but also a bit more forgiving - it took me a while to get used to Boxster's clutch, which is basically linear, without bite point feedback whatsoever.
Shifter action on C2S is more 'plasticky', without much feedback, with my 'not-short-throw' shifter feeling more precise.
For engine sounds, without sport exhaust, C2S was jush meh, but I guess it was to be expected.
Overall, if I could combine, I would keep my Boxster, but put C2S's clutch in it.
Now to the actual question - at 20 mph, even with double clutching, my car seems to resist at all costs when I'm trying to shift into 1st. C2S didn't have any issue with that, shifting between 2nd and 1st with ease. Is it expected?
Thanks!

It doesn’t like a fast down shift 2 -> 1, although it’ll do it more aggressively with a double clutch (which is weird since this gearbox should never require double clutching). This feels like it’s blocked at the gate. It also doesn’t like a very fast up shift 1 -> 2. There’s like a 120 page thread. This feels like it won’t release 1st. Really the only thing to be done is slow the shift down just a fraction of a second.
even so, 1st is very much a driving gear. all the other gear changes are fantastic.

In this car, 1st is so long, it is very much a driving gear, IMO.

What engine mode are you in when trying to shift to 1st? The rev matching in Sport and Sport+ makes it unbelievably easy in my 2021 Cayman T to shift into first at speed...BUT...only when the transmission is good and warm. It's not even something I'd try until the car has been driven a while. Also, tbh, I wouldn't shift down into 1st while moving (at more than 3mph) without either rev matching (myself) or letting the car do it.

I may be old school, but only shift into first if the car is at a standstilll or crawl. The synchros in all cars are designed for that and this one is not much different notwithstanding 1st being long. It’s a starting gear, imo.

You’re missing out! I’ve enjoyed using first as a gear that’s not just used from a start. Synchros are fine, and a solid push into first works every time for me.
