Default Why no HUDs?

I'm curious as to why Porsche doesn't offer heads-up displays on its sports cars. I've got one on my Z4 M40i and have found it to be really useful to the point where I think I'll miss not having it on my CGTS which is arriving shortly. Is it because of Porsche's apparent "analog first" philosophy? Weight? Gimmicky? Or does the Porsche community simply not buy into HUDs as a value-add?

Inquiring minds...

Same question i absolutely love it and find it very helpful. Used it to for past several years.

I liked the HUD in my C7 as well as the ability to customize it to some extent, but I don’t really think about it much.

My first HUD was in G80 M3 Competition

It only really had one value to ME, which was displaying tachometer for shift points (in ZF8 manual mode). The digital tach in the dash display was hard to track or, at least, much harder to track than an analog tach such as that in my GT4.

I do not consider myself 'old-school' - I might be - but I love the analog simplicity of the GT4. I could go into all the stuff that I feel makes a sport car a sport car, but it is all subjective and there will always be those who want to 'ruin' the driving experience with more and more technology.

So, this is one enthusiast who is not eager to see Porsche start pumping certain 'technology' into the 718 sport cars . . . too late for the 911 lineup.

yeah the digital dash in the 992's is bad enough - no HUD's for me!

HUD's are useless if you wear polarized sunglasses. They add weight and cause glares on the windscreen from the HUD box.

Having said that, they do come in handy sometimes and I do sometimes missing have them. I had them on my Corvette's and Camaro. I really liked having it in the Camaro as the instrument panel wasn't the prettiest to look at. In the GT4 though, I love the instrument cluster and enjoy the peaks down at it, especially with the red face gauges I optioned.

I always turn off the HUD in my wife's BMW ... I find it annoying and distracting - and I can never acquire missile lock with it so I have to switch to guns all the time ...

That explains it...you never were able to pick up Jester above the hard-deck.

yeah it always pissed me off that the "hard deck" was not so much a "hard deck" for Jester ... not too mention Goose screaming in my ear!

I liked the HUD in my C6Z, even if it did look like it was from a 1982 fighter jet. Information was there and legible. If done correctly, it's a very useful application of tech IMO.

Depends on the polarization angle of the glasses vs the HUD.

True. In my Camaro it turned the HUD color from white to green, in my g/f's Mazda, it cancels it out all together unless I tilt my head 45 degrees.

^This^ I've got the HUD in my daily, a BMW X3 M40i. 99% of the time I've got polarized sunglasses on, so I only occasionally see it from an angle. Then if I'm out at night I kind of forget about it. The glass box in the top of the dash that makes the HUD on the windshield would require a different kind of instrument binacle in the 718 in order to have it, so it might not be aesthetically pleasing.

What info is your HUD providing that you want so much?

Your speed? You are speeding already and know it.

Your RPM? You can’t miss the big dial in front of you.

Directions or something?

On track, only the RPMs matter.

I never liked a hud either. I thought it was a gimic on 80s cars and then it kinda died off and now it's making a comeback again. kinda like digital dashes were all the rage in the 80s then people discovered analog was superior and digital dashes sucked...

Shift lights (tho I mostly shift by feel), oil temp, water temp, diff temp, trans temp. Tire pressures I can get from the gauge cluster.
