Default Spyder review w/ OAPs, xpipe and softronic

Thought I would comment having the car for a few weeks. I picked up my spyder about a month ago. 2021, 6MT, PCCB's. Currently in the garage are my wife's Taycan Turbo, my 991 speedster and the 991.2 Turbo S which is at Creative Bespoke being completely gutted (over on the 991 turbo page). So the spyder is the daily driver. I had a 981 as well which I absolutely loved and should not have sold. On to this one. So while waiting for the car, I read the board's commentary. I found Bob Z to be really helpful in spec'ing this car. I've bought a car from Bob so I know he specs them right. So I ordered my tune from Scott and cobbled together some flat six OAP's and picked up a Fabspeed Xpipe from a member here as well. So here we go.
First, in stock form, it drives very smoothly. The long gearing is great for the long road jaunts but my god it feels a bit limp noodle at or below 4,000. Took a minute to get used to the gearing but ultimately settled in fine. Compared to the 981 it is sharper (suspension, brakes, body control) but initially not as much fun. Sound from the factory is not good as mentioned here many times. I couldn't agree more. Drove the car about 200 miles and decided to pop the tune on and get the OAP's and Xpipe on. Suffice to say, the tune is fantastic. Again not blowing me out of the seat powerful, but cleans up some bottom/mid end issues and car has a "GT car" feel now. This is actually what the car should feel like from the factory IMHO, much more responsive, better mid range and not chocking at the bottom of the RPM band. No dyno here, all anecdotal but cleaning up the cold start, stop start, cylinder drop well worth it as well. Very happy with Scott's work here. As to the OAP's and fabspeed. Just night and day different, I know there will be a million opinions on JCR vs. Fabspeed vs. SOUL vs. Kline, etc, I am really happy with the sound and cobbled it together for not a lot of dough. The pipes and the tune together again reinforce the GT car feel. This car is now in the neighborhood of my speedster which is where I wanted it to land. After B&M about the ADM and yep I overpaid, I am reminded how good these spyder's are. I thought my 981 was one of the best p-car's I have owned, the 718 with the mods is right there. I love where the car is now and how it drives, perfect compliment to the turbo and great date night car. Shout out to Bob Z, I think his comments were spot on, shout out to Scott at Softronic, just a hero, turns things around in like 10 minutes and Ariazad for the Fabspeed rear, total gentleman and reasonably priced.

It's funny because I got my Spyder this past Friday and my limited experience with the car seems to be in line with your feedback here.

The under 4K RPM sound (or lack thereof) is really my only complaint after ~150 miles. What OAPs did you go with, and are they resonated or not?

EDIT - just reread your post, and you went with the Flat 6 OAPs - I think those are basically straight pipes if I remember correctly...

Dm that's right went with the flat 6's and they are just heat shielded straight pipes. Car does resonate a tad at lower RPMs but given how awful the stock set up was, I don't mind . Some of the other set ups sound great, the SOUL set up I liked a lot and the JCR set up is amazing as well. For what I spent I'm thrilled, it's not the dundon megaphone speedster sound, but it is a substantial upgrade. Also shout out to Brad and the crew at Chicane in KC. I haven't used them before and they were great. Great service and top notch work.

be aware that any straight thru OA{P design is LOUD (combination with my Akrapovic slipon exhaust)! - I personally could not stand it in d/d so went with the Cargraphic high flow resonated OAPs - if Soul had their resonated version at the time I would have tried those - and I still might!

I think that will be my progression - pull the vacuum lines, then consider resonated OAPs (cheapest route with actual changes) and then consider a different back box if I want a revised tone.

The SOUL resonated OAPs look to be a great option, but there's not many videos on YoutTube - we need more of them!

It is louder Larry, comparable to my speedster with megaphone but quieter for sure than the GT3RS with headers into x pipe. I had a full header w/cats to xpipe on the 981 and that was loud. No question I have some drone but at least it sounds like a Porsche . Much better to drive

I knew you would like the Spyder, just as I did when it replaced the Targa GTS! Sound is very subjective though and I have Soul Street Headers, which have high flow cats, as well as Soul's resonated Race Exhaust and I do not think it is too loud, just too fantastic and exactly the sound I was after on an open-top car.

Always glad to help, and it is nice to see someone listen to me! I guess I lost a potential buyer for mine if I decide to sell! What color did you get?

Oh no Bob, you sell that beast and I am your first call, I don't care what I have in the garage. Picked up a black w/ Spyder interior. Not sure about black, we will see. Call me when your trigger finger gets itchy Bob. You know I love your specs

Rogert that! I love the car but one never knows what may come along - you will be the first to know! And Black looks great, when it is clean of course!

Thank you for your interest! I'm working on a video with the resonated OAP's now. The idea behind our resonated version is that you will get the performance and throttle response gains while mitigating some of the added in-cabin presence when paired with headers or a rear system. If the factory OAP are a 1 and our standard OAP are 10, these would come in around a 3 in volume in my opinion. As always we invite anyone weighing all their options to give us a call so we can give a personal recommendation to get you the best result for the most reasonable amount of money.

I'm more than open to working a really sweet marketing discount on our Resonated OAP's for somoeone who can capture some before and after video to add to Mike's work. This really helps build the community understanding of the product's benefits. From my experience they are very stock-like in the sound department with PSE as Mike said, but you get the performance gains of the OAP. Please DM me if interested..

well yeah because in stock form the valves are closed from 1500-4k rpm, get a valve controller to keep the valves open all the time and its a game changer, all I did on mine was that and OAP and it sounds pretty tasty at most RPM's, over 5k it really shines though of course
