Flat6 Motorsports Over Axle Pipes + JCR Valved Race Pipe Review( True GT Car Sound)
I recently picked up a 718 Spyder to pair with my 981 GT4 and honestly, I was extremely disappointed with the sound of the car. I thought I'd do an exhaust setup a few months later after taking care of some other mods but the sound of the 718 GT4/Spyder stock is just awful especially if you compare to a 981 and you actually own a modified 981. I understand sound is subjective but to me a GT type car needs to have a high pitch sound and the 718 has more of a deep rumble which is not sexy at all.
My other issue is I have an "amazing" sounding 981 GT4. It sounds like a banshee is screaming above 5k RPM and is extremely "tame" below 3k which is the best of both worlds(sound on):

I also live in Los Angeles and I'm out in Malibu almost every weekend with the GT4 or now my new Spyder. I've heard other 718 GT4's that have done a mix of headers/over axle pipes/etc and honestly they still sound like a "boat" to me. I won't name brands or names as to not start a flame war but they may sound good to the driver inside the cabin, they do not sound good to someone outside the car in my opinion. I then started researching brands & exhaust setups for the 718 as I was chasing that higher pitch GT like sound. I knew that just an exhaust or OAP's probably wouldn't be enough for me so I had to do Over Axle Pipes + an Exhaust to be happy.
Over Axle Pipes: I went with @Flat6Motorsports Over Axle Pipes because they already come heat wrapped straight from the factory(there are brake lines very close by and I do not want any extra heat into my rear tires especially with all the canyon driving I do) and they are 2.5" in diameter compared to almost every other OAP's being 2.25". With both of those two huge positives plus with the pricing they offer, it became a no brainer.
Exhaust: I read about and watched many videos for 718 Exhausts and finally came to the conclusion that the JCR "ethos" of the brand is exactly what I'm looking for. From what I understand JCR does not want to make the lightest exhaust or the exhaust that produces the most power but instead they want to make an exhaust that sounds the best/replicates that high pitch Porsche GT car sound. The exhaust looks like JCR spent the time to closely study different sound "techniques" and figured out exactly what works for the 718 GT4/Spyder.
Installation: Both were extremely easy to install, friend and I were able to get it done in an afternoon with a Pizza break. Quality for both is extremely top notch and we had 0 issues.
Sound: It's maybe 85% or so as loud as my catless race header 981 GT4. Downshifts are extremely fun now with this setup along with the pops you get on up shifts or letting off the gas around 5k rpm. It's still very quiet below 2k rpm and the JCR is a valved solution which makes it even better to keep closed if you need to for any reason. Does my Spyder now sound like my catless race header 981 GT4? No. Does my Spyder now sound like a proper GT car with a high pitch tone? Yes, it actually sounds fairly similar to other Dundon type GT3's I've heard in person. Here is a clip of how the Spyder now sounds(sounds deep down low but when you hit that 5k+ RPM that higher pitch comes out which I took to redline so everyone can hear) :

Negatives: If you daily the car or are very sensitive in your hearing then there is a small amount of "drone/boom" around the 2400 rpm mark. This is a weekend canyon car for me and honestly its extremely easy to stay out of the 2400rpm mark plus the drone/boom is honestly not that bad but I did want to disclose it as a negative since I know there are those sensitive to this or plan to daily their cars. From what I read, you will get drone with any OAP + Exhaust combination. If you do not want any drone completely and are very sensitive to it then either do just the OAP's or the Exhaust.
Conclusion: I have heard many 718 Spyder/GT4 exhaust setups in person here in Los Angeles and I can conclude that this is the "best" sounding setup that I have heard so far. I will admit I have not heard every single possible combination in existence but when you pair one of the best Over Axle Pipe solutions for our cars along with a JCR Exhaust where their company ethos is to focus on the sound primarily you get a true symphony of aural pleasure. I purchased my JCR exhaust used and if I did not think this setup would make me happy long term, I would resell the exhaust and not make this post. After spending a whole weekend with the exhaust and putting 300+ miles on it, I can say that I have reached my goal of making the 718 Spyder sound like a true GT car and it now makes the car as fun to drive as my GT4 where stock I actually did not enjoy it as much as my GT4.

That actually does sound absolutely brilliant. As someone who's extremely picky with exhausts (went through around a dozen combinations on my old E92 M3), I enjoyed reading your thoughts behind how you landed on this. I'll likely be doing the exact same kit once mine eventually lands.

I figured people would get a kick out of that, the garage is actually the last part that I "need" to renovate but honestly I don't work on my own cars often so I left it as is until it bothers me enough.

Ha! I landed on MPE + ARH with my e90M & JCR for my GT4 muffler section. The M now sounds incredible with zero drone.

Funny! I just posted my Individual E92 M3 up for sale so I know exactly what you're talking about on that platform. I ended up settling with test pipes + MPE exhaust for it after hearing many setups and wanting something a bit more "milder" but still sounds good above 5k rpm.

That does sound really clean. I've been going back a forth on between JCR and Soul and I think I'll end up going with Soul OAP and the JCR back box. I enjoy the Soul sound a lot but man the extra note the TI metal hits is so sweet.

Yeah most of the other exhausts you hear don’t sound as “clean” and “high pitch” as the JCR which is the beauty of it.

I have the Akra link-pipes with JCR VRP, I wonder how they differ in sound if at all...

Thanks for the thread - very cool. Just did the cheap Valve opening mod - but wouldn't mind going to stage two. Was wondering if you get the OEM OAP changed over, you lose the particulate filters correct? How much sound improvement would you get by just replacing the OEM OAP? I am guessing you would get more cracks and pops? TIA!
