Roadtripping in the Spyder, and storage of baggage
We purchased our Spyder almost purely on Porsche performance, appeal and design. As my wife calls it, one sexy bitch.
We also decided it would be a great ride to take on vacations, especially those that involve backroads and mountains. If we need more room, we can always take our SUV.
But could the Spyder hold enough luggage to allow for extended vacations? 2-3 week vacations? And we already knew we weren’t paying $5-7k for the Porsche luggage option.
We bought a bunch of leather duffle bags that would form fit in the fronk and truck. And a small ice chest as well so we could transport a few necessary cold food items.
It turns out its a great car for this type of travel. We pack 4-5 days of clothes in each duffle bag, and we each pack 2 of them. All toiletries go in a separate duffle bag and we also carry one additional duffle bag for food items.
So 6 duffle bags and a 16 quart ice chest all fit neatly in the front and rear storage areas. Extended trips will require a laundry day, but most Airbnb’s have that available.
Because the truck requires more work to open, we store things back there that aren’t necessary each day. So we both put a duffle bag of extra clothes, shoes, hats, etc. back there. We only open that on what we call flip day, exchanging clothes bags.
The Fronk carries the bags we need everyday, so when we get to the Airbnb or hotel, getting things out of the Spyder is fast and easy. We also keep microfiber rags in the bottom of the Fronk so we can wash the car along the way.
Inside the cabin we have a small cold bag that carries 4-6 drinks and a sandwich or two. It uses cold packs to do the job and fits perfectly between the seats and out of the way.
The Spyder may be small, but its extremely well thought out and packs more than meets the eye. And that makes it a fantastic roadtripping ride.
We leave this week for our 3rd roadtrip in the Spyder, this time for a 22 days running through the Smoky and Appalachian mountains and lower coastal towns between Myrtle Beach and Key West.
All Fronk Items for daily needs Fronk 1/2 packed Fronk fully packed Cabin stays clean and only uses a drink and sandwich cool bag Extra luggage in the Truck with room to spare
Just before Covid my wife and I did a 5500 mile US trip over 2.5 weeks. We found that using those cloth grocery bags were perfect and lined up sort of like a filing cabinet in the frunk. We basically packed a day or two in each one and then at the hotels we would just grab the small bag each and head inside.
Note: spend some time online and you can find some neat places to stay like renovated turn of the century banks and jails etc to stay overnight in…
I've done two transcontinental trips in my 981S and it was perfect. I have a Spyder due in June and will be doing at least one in it. They make perfect road trip cars.
you left some free space, below the trunk lid just behind the seats.
It’s not the car, just the people who pack their stuff. Have done some coast 2 coasts (Key West <~> Santa Monica) on a motorcycle, you don’t need much luggage.
PS, did a ski holiday this weekend, snowboard and skis included, no issues at all.
Great idea on the golf bag cooler! We've been using a Porsche oil travel bag, but that only holds two bottles of water. I wonder if you sewed velcro to the back, if it would "stick" to the interior carpet on the back between the seats? Just something to hold it in place if I have to brake hard...my guess would be "no" as the Porsche oil bag has a velcro-type strip on the back, and while it sticks in the frunk/trunk area carpet, it does not stick to the carpet in the interior....
Agree that for a relatively small car, the Spyder and even more so in the GT4 has a good amount of storage options. The one thing about the GT4 that beats out the Spyder though is the rear trunk is part of the interior cabin so you get a little bit extra space behind the seats on top of the shelf which is where the engine is. An additional perk is because the trunk is part of the interior space, it gets A/C too. Unfortunately, the Spyder doesn't have cool air for the frunk nor the trunk.
My wife and I did our one and only road trip last year to Monterey Werks Reunion. Used two carry ons for the frunk and one for the trunk with extra room in the frunk for little things. In the trunk, we fit one carry on and had space left over for other things such as laptop, drone, microfiber towels, etc. We're going to Werks Reunion again, so looking forward to another road trip up the California coast in August.
