Default GT4 RS - Mg vs Al wheels

Does anybody have any ideas about the true weight delta between the Al and Mg wheels? I'm torn - I like the look of the Mg wheels better, but $15K is a lot to spend for just the look of them if there is little real-world difference. On the other hand, I'm ready to spend that much on the Weissach package for purely cosmetic reasons. Odds are very good I'll pick up a set of BBS wheels for track duty anyways (I'm hoping with some aggressive camber we can run at least 255 or 265 up front), so... I'm talking myself out of them.

There was a rumor on a German forum that indicated the MG wheels would cost that much over the counter. So, buy'em that way, if true, and you'll wind up with both for that price.

Anyone have any idea of the benefit of the lighter wheels?

More acceleration? Less top speed?

Magnesium wheels for 991 RS are listed at $20k on Suncoast fyi. They are more expensive afterwards.

But there are lightweight BBS 5 lug FI-R out there as well for almost half the cost.

That's exactly what I was thinking. They look nice too. They're probably not 20 lbs lighter than the stock Al wheels, but I would expect they're at least a bit lighter.

One could actually save almost $5k for black ones for example.

Suncoast is not the cheapest.

Look here

Per my post here showing the weight scales. A set of Fi-R wheels are $9k.

Stock GT4 wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 (PSC2) tires:
Front: 48lbs
Rear: 55lbs

BBS FI-R wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S (PS4S) tires:
Front: 41lbs
Rear: 48lbs

The result was a 7lb per wheel/tire savings or 28lbs overall in unsprung weight. According to specs posted on Tire Rack, both PSC2 and PS4S tires in OEM sizes weigh the same at 24lbs front and 29 lbs rear each, so the weight savings indicated above should be based purely upon the wheels.

I could feel the difference when I replaced the Reds on my Targa GTS with PCCBs, but to answer your question - for your reading pleasure: https://www.eeuroparts.com/blog/unsprung-weight/

If Mg wheels are only available to weissach builds what makes you think Porsche will just sell them to anyone? Has anyone successfully done it with a GT3RS or GT2RS?

i would (and will) go also this path - to order the car with the std wheels (for free) and buy afterwards track or Mg wheels.

one set with Cup2R
one set with PS4S.

don´t know yet - which tires on which rims. maybe the Mg as daily with PS4S... to have the 12,7kg / 28lbs unsprung advantage 90% of the time. and on track the std rims with Cup2R (i´m doing a lot of autox....) and to trailer the car i prefer the cheaper std rims.

Are they the same wheels? Designs look a tad different, though both are magnesium. I’m guessing there will be some import tax for the wheels.

For those considering converting later, you will also have to convert 5 lug to centerlock and that will also be additional cost as well.

Personally would just do Fi-R and save some $$$.

You do realise that this thread is about the GT4RS which comes with CL wheels std and therefore no conversion is necessary.

Hard pass in my opinion. If the fronts were 9 vs 8.5 I think I would do it but paying 15k extra for wheels in stock sizes is hard to justify.
