Curious to know what all of you are using (if anything) to prevent the rear license plate/frame from rubbing on the car paint? I saw on Amazon there is this rubber mat/pad of sorts that you place your license plate on then mount it to the car. I'm not looking for an entire pad, maybe just some rubber bushings/nubs that I can strategically place to help keep the metal away from the paint. Thanks.

I got a silicone frame and cover that pads the entire back side of the plate. Amazon has a collection

I'm using silicone frames on all my cars, seems much better than the plastic or metal frames

I stick some felt furniture pads on the back of the license plate, they work well and they are cheap.

Originally, I overlooked these mats because I thought you couldn't use the mats and a license plate frame over them but in the description, it says to "set your license plate into the recessed front side of the frame, add the frame cover, then install the entire ensemble onto your car." I have a custom license plate frame that I want to use so hopefully I'm reading it right and understanding it correctly. I guess I can buy it and give it a try. Worse case, I can return it.
If the above item doesn't work, I might have to give this a try.

OK, I just checked mine, it has a standard plastic plate surround from the dealer, it is mounted using only the top two screws. The plate and surround are just slightly concave so I have a few synthetic cork bumpers on the bottom back of the plate where it touches the car, this keeps the outside edges of the plate way from the painted surfaces, nothing is scratched and the water drains away easily.

So for now, I think that I am good!

Did the same, but I also bought a black "PORSCHE" frame that uses 4 screws with caps -- It's not moving or flapping at all. Your license plate may "flap" around if only using 2 screws on the top.

I was surprised that you just screw the plate into the body of the car, like a VW. My Audi and BMW cars have an actual plastic mounting plate to attach the license plate too.

So this "actual plastic mounting plate", is it screwed into the car?

On rear plate (rear plate is naked, i.e. no frame or cover) I use some relatively thin plastic washers to bump out the top screws a tad then on the bottom at the corners I just used whatever cushioning stick on type thing I had laying around to stick to the plate. In this case I think it was some 3M spongy stuff that was a few millimeters thick (can't recall why I had it or what it's original purpose was). As mentioned by prior posters, cork, furniture pads, whatever, there are many options that accomplish the same. You don't see it, and the job of whatever is there is just to ensure the sharp edges of the plate don't touch or dig into the paint. So far so good for me with this approach.
