Default Security of driving cross-country post-PEC delivery?

This may be a stupid question, but for those of you who get your cars via PEC in Atlanta or L.A. but don't live in those states, do you / did you have any concerns about the safety of your cars when staying at hotels overnight on the way home?

What are peoples' recommendations in such situations? Do you only stay at nicer hotels that have parking garages so that your new car isn't sitting in the parking lot of some motel overnight, or...?

If you are worried about it getting stolen, you can always pull the fuel pump fuse overnight.

More than anything, I was just curious if it's something people think about or not really.

I’m planning a 2000+ mile trip back home from the dealer and I’m not worried about it. Just pay attention to the hotels you book and plan accordingly. For example, in a big city I would want a somewhat secure indoor parking garage to minimize the chance of damage or theft. I would avoid sketchy towns and hotels just because I wouldn’t want to stay there more than worrying about the car. I’ve kept my nice cars in plenty of outdoor hotel/motel lots in small towns and never had an issue and didn’t worry about it. Try to never leave anything in your car for long and never overnight. Your main risk is a broken window and damage caused by someone stealing a bag you left visible or in the car. Most people can’t steal a car, they just want to take things from it.

I wouldn’t give it a second thought. In fact I’ve done this more than a dozen times in my life and enjoyed every single trip. Just maintain situational awareness, plan your trip and stay in well known locations and name brand motels and you’re good. I prefer motels where you can park at the room but they are becoming hard to find. However, most center hallway motels are flanked by parking so you can usually park outside your room window and keep an eye on it. Get a ground floor room if you can. I tend to avoid the big places like Hilton’s and such because parking is separate from the building and I really don’t want my car to be either flanked my minivans and screaming kids flinging doors open or sitting out by itself as a target.

And most of all forget all the fear **** permeating the Internet and MSM! We live in the safest, most beautiful country in the world, enjoy it whenever you can up close and personal.

That is for sure, and that is my tendency. I'm probably just overthinking it since will be my first Porsche / first sports car.

Thanks for the reply!

Agree with everyone else, there are obviously some sketchy motels out there but as long as you stick to well-known chains that are typically near the interstate, you really don't have to worry. The biggest risk is that you'll wake up to find the car covered in water spots because the hotel had sprinklers that were hidden in the ****ing bushes - I swear this happens to me once on every cross-country trip I take.

I thought about it for sure. My wife and I drove from PECLA to northern CA and needed to stay one night in a hotel. With a Spyder, I kept envisioning someone with a knife opening my top (either out of spite or to steal something, though I never would leave anything visible in the cabin). Car theft in CA is a real concern also. Fortunately, I’m retired military, so I stayed in the visiting officers quarters on Vandenberg AFB. I figured a base that is secure enough for missile and rocket launches is likely secure enough for my car.

Crime is up everywhere, especially here in Atlanta if you come here for PEC.

Seriously, isn't this what insurance is for? If you can afford to buy it, you can afford to lose it.

When I drove my new 1983 944 from Dallas to Philadelphia the only issue I had was the police. Got pulled over twice, they just wanted to look at the car, no tickets.

Yes, of course insurance comes into play, but that wouldn't reduce the pain of waiting 6 months for a car to have it stolen after the first day.

I do AirBnB when taking my sports car. You can find whole house or cottage to rent with off street parking. There are also many converted mansions that are a great stay. I also pack my car cover in the frunk to minimize attention.

I recently did a 5,100 mile cross-country trip. I live about 8 miles from PECATL. As my CGTS order will lock soon, I’m giving serious consideration to PECLA delivery because the last trip was that good.

Chances of the car being stolen or vandalized are just about zero. You bought it. Drive it. That’s what it’s for.
