Default At what stage of the order process does a VIN get assigned?

I'm only at V200, "entry to shop" is late May, expected July delivery. Curious to know when I might expect to have a VIN assigned?

I'm not confident financing rates are going to stay flat in the coming months (certainly don't expect them to go LOWER anyways) and want to lock in the financing. Car's gotta have a VIN first though.

I had thought it was V260 when it was assigned, but either way unless the build is delayed after it starts it takes only a matter of days to build the car, so you are looking at late May/early June...

I don't think the FEDS are going to raise rates for a while yet. The stimulus checks might jump start things a bit, but I don't think they will counter that with higher rates until then see a solid upswing pattern trend. If I were to guess and the economy continues a nice recovery, then I could see a Q1 2022 rate increase, but I really don't think we will see one before that.

Rates will definitely not go further down though, they have very little room to go down as it is, they are near rock bottom.

+1 ... in fact didn' they just state that they wont change rates until 2023 soonest, or when full employment/inflation >= 2%?

I hadn't heard that, but they might have said that.

When I shopped for financing (took delivery 4 weeks ago) the financing quotes only had a 30 day lock.

Hmmm. My dealer seems to think that, at least if I go through PFS, I can lock the financing in the instant I get a VIN.

Wouldn't be the first time dealers have been wrong about things though.

This is correct. I got my V300 May 2020 and billed the car out immediately. The car did not get delivered until July 2020.

This is not surprising; PFS rates are usually higher than comparable CU rates so motivated to get you locked!

There is at least 30 and it can be as much as 90 days between getting the VIN assigned and you being able to take delivery. Most rate locks are 30 days so just keep that in mind.
