Default Porsche Vehicle Tracking System Plus

Been reading the manual that came with my new 718 Spyder and I came across this section. I have talked to my SA and he is not sure what it it is. It starts on page 180 of the manual and here is what it says - anybody have a clue. Looks like some kind of LoJack thing .

Nothing new for subscription services like this; GM on-star is similar.

Pretty sure you’ll need built in nav for GPS.

I don’t think it’s Nav related, I just don’t think it’s US related... does sound like a LoJack style device.

I believe its part of the Porsche Car Connect. I have an app on my phone that tells me details including location of my car. You can set geo fencing parameters as well. It was activated when I picked up my car. I do not have Nav on my GT4.

Agree with @pettelli in that it's a connect feature. If you have connect and have subscribed to the two different services, Porsche connect and Vodaphone (or whatever it's called) you may or may not be able to figure out how to use such features. Was that confusing enough?

In my experience... anything Porsche connect is a PITA to deal with and clunky at best. The Google maps and unlimited map updates haven't worked in our macan for almost a year and they keep telling me there no fix for it yet. Well, good luck getting my renewal!

Happy to have at least one car without nav or connect built in and will NEVER seek those options out again. CarPlay for the Win though!

I tried to (and then my SA failed as well) to setup Porsche Car Connect before I left the dealership with my car. He was pretty adamant that Porsche wanted the purchaser to be setup with it before they drive off.
He struggled with it (on the phone with tech support too) to get me connected, but I left without knowing what the heck it really does... Then I sort of forgot about it.
Not to get off topic, but what exactly is it and do I really need it?

It was very important at the dealership that I get this setup during pickup.

Then they said not available for my car; lol Spyder.because.weight.

No GPS Nav.

Anyway no need for another app.

LoL... even porsche's not sure what it does, other than generate income for them.

When I initially set up the connect and maps service they sold me on the fact it included vehicle tracking if stolen. In hindsight... I'm paying for insurance to protect my interests, why do i need to pay Porsche to recover something I'm not going to want back after it's been on a joy ride?

My Spyder without nav or CarPlay is not equipped with Porsche Connect (even lacks the radio hardware). I like it that way - the less connectivity, the better, given my experience working in the embedded systems security world.

Porsche Car Connect provides the following info:

current location of vehicle (useful if you don’t know where you left it). Unlikely...

vehicle stats. remaining fuel, current miles, tire pressure, last trip, ability to fold in mirrors & lock vehicle, sound horn / lights. notification in google msps when vehicle is parked.

Compatible with Apple Watch (maybe it’s part of the CarPlay package). No Nav in my car

it’s a little “clunky” for a 2020. Fits the PCM that seems to be 5 years out of date.

I didn’t pay any upfront cost and not aware when/if there will be a fee.

I do believe it would be helpful if the vehicle is stolen. I have no idea who to contact in the event of vehicle theft. I thought the SA said Porsche could disable the vehicle but there wasn’t any info provided.

For free it’s worth it. Not sure I’ll pay a large annual subscription fee if that’s the case.

It’s a tracker, in the UK some insurers require anti-theft devices for vehicles above an insured value of around $130k.
