Ok, that settles it! Thanks man. I rerouted my negative from the terminal to the body.

It explains that the positive lead of the charger should be connected to the positive battery terminal and the negative lead should be connected to the under-hood charging post. The implication is that doing so will avoid sparks if using alligator clips, but it’s not explicit. There is no mention of charging through a cigarette-lighter-type outlet, which would be very strange if what you posted above pertains to the 718. They also say, “Observe the instructions of the charger manufacturer.”

So I’m not convinced that the 718 has the circuitry in the information above. It’s quite informative nonetheless. And it certainly can’t hurt to connect the negative charger lead to a remote location, but I’m not seeing anything to really confirm that. Quite interesting discussion. Thanks.
It mentions the Tecquipment maintainer (https://content.us.porsche.com/prod/...257D12003DE273) which comes with a primary connection for the cigarette lighter and an alternate for cars without one. On the one without one you use what's in the manual which provides ground to the body side of the BMS / BMC which provides the isolation that allows it to function as if it were connected to a 12V adaptor inside the car.

Bottom line, use the 12V socket in the car, which all 718's have even without the smokers package.

Wizee, thanks for posting... I just rerouted my negative connection per the diagram. Also a side note if you disconnect your battery overnight, you will get a low voltage code thrown and Durametric won't clear it. Had to make a run to the dealer. Had to replace a striped battery cable bolt! Fun.

A related battery tender question. I have a Porsche battery tender (C-Tek I believe) that I used on my 2015 981 C/S. I used it through the socket in the center console for 6 years never a problem. Plugged it in and just let it do its thing.
My question: Can I use this same battery tender in the MY 21 GTS 4.0?
Thanks!

I have 4 CTEKs for varying years. No issues. They make the Porsche branded one, don't spend extra on the Porsche logo.

Super easy to just plug into the cig port and run the cable out the door (with door closed). Or hardwire their comfort connect plug to the battery and quick connect there, but why would you when the previously mentioned method is so simple.

Yes, simple for sure. I also place a piece of soft Scott Towel between the cord and the sill just to have a bit of cushion between the cord and the sill plate.
I was not sure if the newer 21 cars had the same basic battery as the older 15 MY cars. I have read that the newer cars have a different battery technology and was not sure a 6 year old tender would work. I appreciate the information by you and mjw930.
As an aside the electrics in these modern cars is amazing. I had a 914/6 back in the day and I think the entire electrical harness had like 15 wires....and when you turned the key to off the car was really off.

thanks all very interesting. To be clear using the 12 v plug in you run the power wire between the door and the sill and close the door? this will not pinch the wire lead?

No not at all. Just run the cord over the sill with a little slack and close the door, I generally make sure the cord is flat ( not laying on edge) and place a soft piece of paper towel between the sill and the cord. Just close the door and walk away. been doing this for 6 years both on my departed 2015 C/S and my 2001 B/S with "0" problems. One caution, just be careful that someone walking near the car does not get their foot caught under the cord and trip or kick / step on the control box.

CTEK makes a number of different models. Anyone in particular?
Car will be Boxster GTS 4.0 - if it ever gets out of the damn port in RI where it has been sitting since mid October

So I don’t have my car yet and haven’t purchased a tender either... It sounds like the Ctek is a good suggestion.
So just to confirm, you plug it into the wall and then with the proper connector, you plug it into your cigarette lighter (smoking package option was ordered), select the type of charge you want and it’s good to go?
No messing with the key/on/off ?

Thanks,

~Speedy

That's it! Basically select normal or cold mode on the ctek for your new battery/car.

One quirk on my 991.2 GT3 which I noticed this year. I had it off on my lift for weeks now, no tender plugged in. I went to plug in the tender on the weekend but it didn't start charging. This is because the tender was activated well after the car had been off and locked. I just unlocked and locked the car with the fob and plugged in the tender right away, started charging (so no need to put key in ignition).

I have the MUS 7002 and older models. Think the MUS 7002 is the one you want now for cars unless you have a lithium battery.

Check out their site, good info on selecting one.
