If they offered this auto-top set-up as a free option for the Spyder, I predict that 80%+ of buyers would tick it. This would be even better for the remaining 20% manual top “purists” as it would improve the rarity of their cars. Win-win!
I’d be one of the 20% and not because I’m some sort of Porsche purist. Solely because it looks ducking awesome. Pretty much that simple. The same reason I’m getting the LWBS, over priced extra stitching, and black calipers that are also a complete rip off.

Now if the GT4 could be ordered without the wing I’d be tempted to get it over the Spyder.

I'll add my 2 cents. IMO, the Spyder is special looking and the GTS isn't. Plain and simple. I'm sure the GTS drives wonderfully and has a great engine, blah, blah, blah, but it isn't a compelling design and visually is no more exciting than any Boxster/718 that's been produced for the last several years. I drive a 991 C4 and find myself coming back to this forum time and time again to see pictures of the Spyder. It's all about the humps. For those who've bought one or are waiting for one, I think you've hit the automotive jackpot. I keep trying to rationalize how I could daily drive a Spyder through Chicago winters, but I can't, so it won't happen. In general, I also have no interest in convertibles, but would have considered tolerating one just to be able to own a Spyder.

If the GTS was identical to the GT4, save for no wing and had SPASM instead, I would have been interested, but it’s not, and all those differences add up to a much less desirable car IMO. But that’s just my personal preference. I will say though, as I put more miles on my GT4, if I were looking for a DD, I’d be looking at the GTS, not the GT4.

I went for the 718 GTS. I will not track the car and the wing is a little too much for my taste. I know this sounds petty, but the cloth door handles put me off too. I do wish the I could have the GT4 suspension bits.

And you can actually buy a GTS ... an important point.

That was my point about the Boxster GTS vs the Spyder. The differences are just large enough to make it a difficult decision.

You can buy a Spyder and a GT4 too. No problem at all.

Maybe, but it's often surprising what lower ride-height, better bumpers/spoilers, and fatter tires can do for the stance and the look of a car. And the original, proven, minimalist and pure Boxster shape/design is not chopped liver either. Maybe I'm crazy but I still occasionally go into the garage, turn on the lights and admire the curves of my 987 Boxster.

I guess I wasn't being fair to the current 718 design in my previous post. I like the appearance of the current 718 and I admire their looks when I see them on the road. I think the design is a little long in tooth, however, and I have no desire to own one. Conversely, I think that the Spyder is the best looking 2 door produced by Porsche in recent memory. As I said, I don't own one and have no skin in the game. I'd like to be able to find a way to rationalize buying one, but it's not in the cards for me. Once again, sorry to have insulted those who own or intend to buy a non-Spyder 718. I drove a T4 GTS at a Porsche track event and appreciate that they're fun cars.

The Spyder is Pamela Anderson jogging down the Baywatch Beach in the 90s. GTS, maybe Gena Lee Nolan. Together no one notices poor Gena. Apart, Gena is a rock star.

I just hope the Spyder ages better than Pamela.

You were completely fair and I don't think anyone got insulted either. The looks and the GT suspension compete with the hassle of the manual top -- that, in a nutshell, is the Spyder equation for me. FWIW, after every ten or so GTS 4.0 configurations, I still veer off into the Spyder section and do one there, lol...
