Tire choice for GT4

I started looking for OEM rims too but seems much more expensive than something like, say, Forged One FF10s.

I understand one of the risks with swapping wheels with PCCBs is the potential damage to rotors which can be avoided with right tools. Sorry for sounding naive but can you tell me what kind of trouble are we looking talking about w.r.t swapping tires? I did swap tires on my GTS wheels (center-lock) for 3 years, twice a year. Never had any issue. So I am not aware of any potential damages/risks.
I did find your thread and I love your FF10 wheels. Looks so much like OEMs. Unfortunately they are out of stock on tire rack and couldn't find them anywhere else Do you know where else I can find them? Thanks in advance.

Regarding the FF10's, I am not positive but do believe that Forged One is Tire Rack's own 'In House' brand and you will not find these sold elsewhere, either that or they managed to secure an exclusive contract with Forged One to distribute these wheels in North America. The rear wheels shipped in a few days but I waited for about 6 weeks for front wheels to come in and be shipped, but you must get them on order for this to happen, TR doesn't charge you until they ship the product. There are other similar and even lighter wheels out there (HRE) but they are substantially more than the Forged One wheels.

I figure I saved about 20-25% $$ with the FF10's over the OEM wheels, slightly lighter and bit more open than the OEM too.

Swapping tires, if everything goes according to plan there should be no issue, however, with these extremely stiff/short side walls the tire machine is applying a lot of force to stretch the tire over the wheel, if everything is clamped down tight and nothing slips or the arm doesn't touch the wheel that part completes without damage to the tire or wheel edge, still we have the wheel weights, they have to be removed (scrapped off) each time and the assembly rebalanced, again if reasonable car is taken then there should be no scratched to the wheel barrel... but every time this is done the potential exists. Where I bought the tires, the head tech took me aside and explained that although they could do the mounting on the RE980AS tires he suggested a high end shop that had tire machines better suited to low profile tires, even telling me they had experienced such problems in the past, so YMMV! For me, I show my cars, the inner parts of the wheels are just as clean as the outer parts, cleaned and detailed regularly like the painted body of the car, I don't need the extra work of old wheel weight tape or scuffed wheel edges to contend with, or worse yet a wheel that slips and get damaged.

I think you are right regarding FF10s. I couldn't find them anywhere else other than tire rack. Even in tire rack, they do not show up if I search for 718 GT4 compatible wheels. So I called them and they directed me to 981 GT4 compatible wheels which in this case are the same spec as 718 GT4. Can you confirm you got the same 981 GT4 compatible wheels? Looks like these wheels are readily available to ship.

I agree. FF10s seem to be the cheapest option by far (and I like the looks as well) and they come with weight advantage. Did you get them with TPMS and Porsche center caps? If so, what do the center caps look like?

Got my 981 GT4 wheels for $3.1k. They’re in awesome shape. 🤘 They’re Black and should be a nice compliment to the Platinum wheels I’ve ordered.
Keep an eye on the rennlist marketplace there’s good deals for those that wait. That’s where I got mine.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I see why having second set of wheels is more than just a convenient factor.

Caps, I like them and they are well done out of billet aluminum and finished in the same colour as the wheels, I choose to run with them based on this and a couple of other reasons. The Graphite wheel colour on the FF10 is not quite the same as the OEM Platinum Satin, so you would have to have a set of Porsche caps painted to match, also the OEM Porsche caps seemed a little loose, not because of the diameter but because the actual tabs on the cap or slightly different, I tried a set of caps from Carrera S wheels not the OEM Spyder wheel, but still there was the colour match issue. Here is a picture to help you decide...

Yes these are listed as for the 2016 981 GT4 with Ceramic Brakes Yellow Caliper, I went through this with Tire Rack as well, they personally have not had the opportunity to fit the FF10's to a 718 GT4/Spyder, understandable but I wonder if they have tested a 981 GT4? Anyway I asked about the scenario where they did not clear, they said no problem, if you have not mounted tires then simply return them to us for a refund. The Forged One site shows them on a Gentian Blue GT4, but I think that is Photo Shopped, looks like Knock Hill in Scotland to me? In the end the physical specifications for the FF10's (other than weight) are exactly the same as the OEM 718/981 GT4 wheel, my only concern was barrel and spoke shape, these both needed to clear those big front calipers. In my case I was putting the OEM UHP Dunlop's on them so I had the opportunity to get them on the car without tires and check clearances, these turned out to be pretty much identical to the OEM wheel, It is tight but so are those OEM Spyder wheels!
So the TPMS situation is a work in progress, I ordered them with the wheels (433 MHz with valve stems), but when the local dealer tried to read them with their hand held device they did not register so they swapped in the OEM sensors from the Spyder wheels. I called TR on this and they are adamant that they will work and they simply just needed to leave them in the wheels and give the car a chance to discover them. So Right now I have the FF10's with OEM TPMS and Dunlop Race 2 tires on the Spyder and everything clears and there have been no issues over the past 1100km's. I am currently waiting for the RE980AS front tires to arrive, when they do I will have them and the rears mounted using the TR supplied TPMS units and will be able to confirm if it all works, TR has promised to make it right if their sensors are not picked up by the car.

Thanks for the pics. Those calipers look dangerously close to both the barrel and the spokes. But as you said, OEM wheels are no different. Real challenge is swapping the wheels without leaving any kind of marks on calipers or the rims themselves. Thanks again for those close up shots. Great looking wheels btw. If not for the PCCBs, it would be a pain in the a$$ to clean those wheels I think.
I don't plan on using OEM platinum wheel caps for FF10s or buy new set if they don't match the paint. I am OCD about those things. But in tire rack, there was an option to choose Porsche wheel caps while ordering these rims. Was wondering if you got those and how they looked. Unfortunately they did not have a picture of the caps on their site.

Felt so sorry for the likely owner, whoever they are; much more likely to be a student or somebody in the service industry, not tech money (though theoretically could be--this is one reason my daily is an equally old BMW 3er with a visibly jacked-up front bumper and some dings/dents that I deliberately don't fix...already had somebody kick out the remaining fog light a couple years ago).
That said, this only really applies to certain central neighborhoods. You won't have issues in the suburbs or most residential areas (Magnolia, Queen Anne, Montlake, etc).

Here are some pictures of the OEM front wheels, as you can see the clearances are minimal with these as well, I am not looking forward to swapping wheels either and highly recommend the use of 2 wheel hangers when doing this (pictured in the earlier post). As for cleaning, both wheels will present similar challenges with the FF10's slightly more busy, either way this has to be considered a labour of love!
I like the Forged One caps, the machining is very clean an they look like an integrated part of the wheel, the Porsche caps are the correct diameter but not as think so they sit low in the center opening, I am sure you could figure out a way to make them sit higher though. It is my understanding there is no option to buy Porsche caps from TR, the wording is awkward but they are saying that the wheels come with their own caps or you could re-use your OEM Porsche caps, under Optional Hardware they are referring to the purchase of a replacement set of Forged One caps, I verified all of this before ordering.
This is why I was confused. I interpreted this optional cap as Porsche Cap made by Forged One and that is why they are charging additional $$.
