Default Extended Warranty

Starting a thread to compare Extended Warranty and other packages.

Dealer sent this over for me.

Tire and Wheel:

8 years, $2,060. (covers non mag and CF aftermarket wheels. Also covers non oem tires)

Vehicle Service Protection (VSP) (Platinum):
8 years, 60k : 5,036
9 years 60k: 5,454
10 years, 75k: 7,758 ()

What prices are you getting?

I'm on the fence about the 9 year warranty due to the new engine but I'm not convinced it'll pay for itself. Then again, there's something to say about peace of mind. Geico wouldn't do MBI on the car due to value :/

Stands for Vehicle Service Protection. Basically the name for the extended warranty, despite that it has "service" in the name. I've clarified OP with a link to a downloadable brochure.

Is that a 3rd party warranty? If so, I wouldn't touch it.

I had one before and the 3rd party warranty had so much fine print it was crazy. I had a part go bad
on a VW. VW called the part a certain name and the warranty called it something different.
They wouldn't cover it.

I'd go for the Excelsior Plus Package.

It used to be underwritten by a third party but it's Porsche branded so I wouldn't have an issue with it if it still is a third party. I don't have all the terms but obviously will read those to confirm and see how easy it is to get a claim. I'm going to guess it's like all insurance. it's fine until you start to exceed the amount paid and then they turn difficult. But again, being Porsche branded, they have skin in the game. Maybe I'm the gullible type that falls for this :P.

8 years, 60k : 5,036

^ This warranty will cover you for 4 additional years and 10k more miles than the standard warranty? Standard is 4yr 50k miles.
Most of us will need the additional years not the miles. Sounds about average for an additional 4 years.

Tire and wheel?? Have you ever broken a wheel? Typical tire and wheel packages don't cover curb rash. And if you ever did break a wheel, that would be covered under your basic collision coverage. Therefore, I think tire and wheel insurance is ludicrous. And $2K?? That's about the price of 2 wheels (maybe one if you bought them new from Porsche). If you're worried about your wheels getting stolen, that would be covered under comprehensive. If tire and wheel insurance was $200, I would not take it. Even for $20, I'd honestly have to think about it. Perhaps $2, but even then, it would be a waste IMHO. Why would covering the whole car cost $5k when only the wheels cost $2k? You didn't laugh at them when they gave you that price?

If you read the PDF the OP posted it actually covers a lot. They will replace tires/wheels for any road hazard. They cover curb rash (up to 8) so long the wheel does not need to be replaced.

If it covered curb rash, I’d be willing to pay $20 for the tire and wheel insurance (being 100% serious). If you’re that worried about curb rash, the $2k would be better spent on a driving class. 😉

Correct. Total of 8 years, additional 4. 9 years is probably the sweet spot since it’s $400 more than 8 years. Not sure why the jump in 10. Maybe miles going to 75k. Maybe Porsche knows something we don’t.

As for the wheels tires, note that it’s a replacement. If you get a nail, they replace the tire and don’t plug/patch it. Some places with lots of potholes and road hazards, might be worth it. I’m not seriously considering it but across 8 years, It would be worth it for some. I’ve only ever gotten one nail in my tire in the last 15 years.

Hey Denny, brushed a curb avoiding some jackass sliding into my lane and they took care of it, no questions asked; along with a complete undercarriage inspection. Also had 2 tires replaced under warranty; one for hitting a bumper on the interstate (fortunately just a tire was damaged), and another for a nail (tread had > 50% wear remaining).

I’ll be getting the tire & wheel when I pickup my GT4. Likely windshield too.

In my experience, those prices are negotiable, sometimes up to 40% discount.

Looking forward to this information, I thought that in Canada they did it in 2 year increments, 4-6 then 6-8 and could be applied for just before the end of the initial 4 year term?

I am also looking at the pre-paid maintenance plan...
