Default Why call it "Noise"

Noise means: a sound, especially one that is loud or unpleasant or that causes disturbance. I don't know why most of the British/European English speaking reviewers use the word "noise" to describe the sounds a car makes. The US/Canadian reviewers now are copying the British in the use of this word. This refers to engine noise, exhaust noise, wind noise, tire noise, nvh etc. They say the new GT4 makes a great "noise" when getting to redline. When my wife is yelling at me or I'm yelling at the kids, that is noise. I don't think noise is a good thing in most cases. My 997 GT3 RS doesn't make any noise whatsoever.

Some synonyms from the www:

sound ˇ loud sound ˇ din ˇ hubbub ˇ clamor ˇ racket ˇ uproar ˇ tumult ˇ
commotion ˇ pandemonium ˇ clangor ˇ crash ˇ clatter ˇ clash ˇ babble ˇ shouting ˇ yelling ˇ babel ˇ bangarang ˇ hullabaloo

^^ The words one uses have much to do with the manipulation being implied to the reader, or to reduce words to their simplest terms, or both. In this context, I often see the 982 versus 981 described as noise versus performance. It's both manipulation and simplicity. They both perform and both make sound. One aspect isn't exclusive to one over the other. I could elaborate on the differences of both, how Porsche's choices of design and suppliers affected both differently, and other characteristics that matter. But we usually just get the simplest of terms, like noise. I usually just consider the source.
