Buy Older GT4 or Wait for Newer GT4

I've driven and tracked 911 Turbos for a long time. My latest 2011 TTS with PDK is great and IMO a "keeper". But I still still miss a manual and the more driver-focused experience and engagement that older Porsche's provide.
Admittedly I don't know a lot about the 718's so I need some advice from the experts. As I read more about the 2016 and later 718 GT4's I sense that these may be a good all-around fun car to own, perhaps occasionally track, and enjoy as a part time DD. But, I'm torn between buying the older GT4 with the 4-cylinder engine or waiting for the newer 4.0L 6 cylinder due out soon. I've checked my local dealers here in DC and NVA who are literally giving away their current inventory of 2019 718's (non-GT4) which tells me the market is very soft on these cars. Carmax has a used yellow 2016 GT4 for $90K which seems very high to me but it's also a manual, nicely equipped and yellow which pairs with my TTS (a goal). Given what I've just posted should I consider it or should I wait for the 2020 or new cars?

Word on the street is that the owner of TPC Rracing may be selling his yellow 981GT4... but you didn't hear that from me.

981 GT4s still go for high resale unless the original MSRP was loaded with options ($110k+). Tysons just had a red one with buckets and around 6k mi go for $95k w/ CPO ($100k MSRP). Private sellers are the way to go for these if you want a deal, but even then don't expect to see any for less than 20% off sticker w/o accident history. The higher MSRP on the 718 GT4s have helped the prices staying up. And yes, these older ones have the 9A1 6cyl motor out of the 991 Carrera S.

Thanks, did not know the 2016 and newer GT4's had the 6-cylinder. That makes a difference. I'm glad I asked the experts. So a yellow high-optioned low mileage 2016 GT4 for $90K isn't too unreasonable? I've bought 6-7 cars from CarMax including my current 997.2 TTS and 2011 CTT. I've always had good luck with them and their MaxCare warranty is second to none (no affiliation). From what little research (and it shows) I've done so far the big difference appears to be 4.0L, 414 HP, and 50% more aerodynamic increase. Given the price differential between the "older" GT4 and the "newer" GT4 is it worth the wait?

I think that many 981 GT4 owners on here are staying put as the performance difference isn't big enough - frankly i am not a good enough driver to be able to take advantage of the aero grip - and headers probably close the power gap. The upside of the 718 is a new car specced the way you want it with a 4 year warranty (UK). But its a lot of money and if you buy a 981 make sure its had its gearbox done and that you get the over rev independently checked. The 981 motor is well known and has been used super hard in motorsport. The new engine is an unkown quaantitiy but no reason to imagine it wont be great too. I haven't read yet if Porsche has changed the design of the front turrets which with a mixture of bad luck, aggressive driving or a pot hole can fail in the GT4 (and 3). IN the US I've read that the GT4 price plus ADM is in line with a good GT3.
Whatever you do I reckon you will love the car you buy, the GT4 981 is the best car I've owned. Good luck !

$100k spec car for that CarMax car but no buckets. They probably paid the owner $82k for that on trade. If you're also in the DC area and might be interested in a guard's red one with buckets and the transmission recall just done, feel free to PM me and I can link you up with my friend who might be looking to sell his at the right price. <3k miles on it, Xpel PPF'd and also was MSRP'd at $100k.

New if you can get one at MSRP I'm desired timeframe. 981 if not and if the price makes sense. They are still selling above MSRP or close to it. 3-4 year old car now. They will stay higher if there are delays with the 718. Wait till 718s hit land en mass.
I had a 981 GT4. Superb car, maybe lacking some power but otherwise perfect.

That GT4 is still there. The original MSRP was $94K and they are asking $93K. Hard to believe a 4-year old car still sells for almost MSRP. I think I'm going to wait for the unicorn Racing Yellow with PCCBs and buckets.

I've been looking for 6MT car that I can track. Tuesday I found a unicorn 2016 GT4 at CarMax for $76K so I'm having it transferred for free from PA to VA. It's white/black with 24K miles without a lot of options. It's doesn't have PCCB's, fancy stitching, full leather, adaptive sport seats, Sport Chrone, Sirius/XM and etc. in other words it's a very basic original $86K GT4 with an OEM fire extinguisher and a few other non-essential options. But, it's purpose built for tracking and it's almost exactly what I was looking for. I'll post again with results after the car arrives.

the prices of the GT4 recently went back up, likely b/c of the delays with the 982. A few weeks/months ago, they had come down some.

I've also noticed a $3-5K dealer increase in some well optioned low mileage cars. However, as I read more reviews of the new now delayed GT4 it seems the 2016's are just slightly the preferred choice. Why, they appear to be more of a raw drivers car, not as refined or sophisticated as their replacement, and one year limited USA production and delivery. Most car reviews also consider the 2016 to be a future collectible ranking at or near the top of every list. So what does this all mean, time will tell in the future but right now - nothing IMO.

Update, still have not seen the car. When it arrived in VA the airbag light was on so Carmax sent it to my local Porsche dealer. I don't know if this is a result of the airbag capacitor recall/software update or, as it was explained to me, a change was made by the former owner to the passenger seat occupancy sensor.
Another question, are there any known emerging, recurring/persistent problems I should be aware of?
