Default Do I really want a 718?

My Porsche story started about 20 years ago when I bought a 968 street car. I loved driving the 968 and did most of my errands, short trips etc in it. I caught the bug and progressed the car into a race car and ran it until 2013 when I bought a dedicated 987.2 race car and ran that until 2020 when I bought a 2019 GT4 club sport. In the mean time my daily drivers have been Cayennes with the current being a turbo S. This current Cayenne is so fast and handles so well I am questioning buying a 718 and if I bought one I would like to to at least a GT4 which are un-obtainium!! So, do I dive into buying a Cayman until I find the one I want or check the box on race weekends and buy a new Cayenne GTS?

I think the question should be “why wouldn’t I want a 718?”

My first impression driving the 718 GT4 was, 'I should have just bought a race car'

Since then, it's grown on me. But if I'd had clubsport seat time, I would be disappointed in the GT4. Too much compromise in it's stock form.

I'm currently putting clubsport brakes and a half cage into the GT4 for what its worth.

I'm confused by what you're even asking for or why GT4's are unavailable.

what is the purpose of the car? if a daily driver i think your familial place in life would be the dictator. have a wife and kids - may be hard to live with a 718 being a 2 seater, even more so with a gt4.

whenever someone mentions a cayenne i always think of this:

and there are lots of gt4 pcars available, it's just that most people are not willing to spend $20,000-$75,000 over list

What's wrong with the current Cayenne?

Nothing wrong with the current Cayenne TTS. Less than 70k miles and very fast!

I guess I need to drive a 718 on the street and see how I like it.

Absolutely you need one. My Porsche journey started with a 987 Spyder that I loved. I felt it lacked horsepower and traded to a 05 911 TTS. The 911 was fast but that was about it. I missed the handling of the 987. So I traded the 911 for a 981 Spyder. Huge improvement over the original Spyder and checked most of the boxes the 911 Turbo didn’t. Family dynamics changed and traded the 981 for a 2020 Macan GTS. Love my Macan and it feels much faster in PDK than my manual 981. But I still missed the driving experience of my past Spyders. Last Saturday I picked up my 23 Spyder in manual. I retire in March and this is the car that I knew would take me many years into the future. There is just something very special about these cars. In my opinion this 718 checks every box for the perfect sports car.

My comment won't be appreciated in this forum but it's my opinion. Why would you consider buying the Cayman? Your club sport is obviously track only but I can tell you that all other Cayman's you drive you will gauge by it. I know I would even if I tried not to. The current GT4/Spyder is ridiculously underpowered for the price. Maybe that isn't important to you as it doesn't seem to be with many others...? I love the platform but not the detuned engine. I owned a 21 Spyder for a short time and drove a Gt4 but the lack of push lost my interest. I have owned 2 turbo 991's and several 991 911's. Personally, my GT3 RS was just perfect in handling and performance in comparison. I hated the carbon fiber race seat posture. A regular GT3 would have worked better for me in hindsight. Because I enjoy the 718 platform so much I searched for a 2018 Boxster GTS with great options and immediately had an APR stage 1 tune and I could not be happier! I did the same a few years back with my 18 Cayman GTS and never regretted it. There is no shortage of power now and I am loving the drives.

A Cayenne simply is not remotely as fun a drive as ANY 718. Though smaller, neither is a Macan. If you like sport cars and really enjoy driving them, you should buy what you can afford. Which 718 depends on the intended use - they all have their pros and cons.

I have a 2018 Base Cayman with an APR stage 1 flash and it is simply a great platform. You can find them used with low mileage for a very reasonable price. I've been able to do all of the maint. myself with no issues. I also did the cat back straight pipe thing with APR and the sound is excellent. There is enough HP/T/pick up to get in trouble (350ish with the flash) and I went with manual tranny and no nannies or additional creature features so light and fun.

I would hate having to drive a cayenne vs. a normal car. My wife has a Macan S, way sportier than a cayenne, and I hate driving it.

I recently traded in my 718S 6MT for a G550 because we needed a bigger car for the baby. Miss my 718!
