Default Spark Plug Service

Hi everyone,

I just recently purchased a 2018 718 GTS and the OEM recommended a 4-year service. The vehicle has 10,000KMs on it, is it necessary to do the Spark Plugs and Brake Flush at this time? or can I just do the oil change and do the rest according to mileage.

Thanks!

Interesting question. 4 year old car with 6000 miles. I think a break fluid flush is a good idea. The spark plugs? No so sure.

My two cents.....if it's still in the hands of the selling dealer and you are having oil service, I'd probably just have them do the spark plugs, air filter, oil change, and brake fluid flush. Get it done, and enjoy the car. Break fluid accumulates moisture over time. Car's been sitting, not driven much. ? Transmission service too?

Plug change at 4 years is recommended due to possible seizing if left longer. The real problem is access. Once they become corroded removing them, without dropping the engine, becomes difficult and can lead to a plug breaking in the head - not good. A brake flush is always a good idea. I suggest you do both as scheduled.

As above - do both. The plugs can size in place over time (galling of dissimilar metals) even if not 'burned out' from many miles.
Brake fluid very important! It is hygroscopic - i.e. absorbs moisture from the ambient environment and loses its effectiveness over time and not just miles. Of the three maintenance items you mentioned, this is the one most likely to end badly if not done!
You're buying a very nice car. Don't be penny wise and pound foolish skimping on maintenance and safety. Finding a good independent mechanic (or learning DIY) is the smart way to save money. Post on the RL regional forums to find someone near you that is known in the community. Alternately, if you're purchasing from a dealer now, negotiate a discount on the service - they should hypothetically be selling you a well-maintained, ready to drive car.

My dealer Bluegrass Porsche (Louisville KY) insisted spark plugs on turbo engines are every 3 years (despite what is in the owners manual). Oil change and plug change parts and labor was $878.

Your OPC can recommend. It can advise. It can urge. But if the written schedule states ‘every four years’ I don’t see how it can insist. Having said that, if your dealership is anything like the muppets local to me, it’s no surprise they shaft you with unnecessary costs. Perfect example of why I use an indi for what I can’t/won’t do myself.

Stick with the factory recommended service schedule...future buyers will place value on it. But doing something early is not required unless you are tracking it.

It's called up selling.
