How has your experience been in the canyons?
its one of the best canyon cars ever made! Power isn’t as important in canyon cars imo. Balance and handling are king!

My old 991.2 GTS was a cushy, quiet, and comfortable car compared to my 718 GT4.

If it is going to be your only car, a 911 is a good all around car. It is not as thrilling to drive as the GT4. Yes, the GT4 cabin is louder but it is daily drivable.

it’s insane in the canyons. Big upgrade from my E90. It is not, however, a great passenger car. My date / wife refuses to ride in it at all. Although her friend quite pointedly disagreed and thought it would be a great date car. So … anyway …. I guess it depends on the date.

it’s much louder in the cabin than the M3, or any of the Carreras. It’s louder in the cabin than a corvette.

The F80 doesn’t have significantly more hp. It does have a lot more torque thanks to the turbos. It also has an extra 400#. The gt4 needs to be whipped. The NA engine needs to be rev’d out to make torque. If you think low band torque and turbo boost is fun, you may not enjoy it as much. If you want your car to scream “whip me harder daddy” in the canyons, then it’ll blow the F80 away.

As others have said, consider the Cayman GTS 4.0 instead of the GT4 if you want something a little more quiet and livable on a daily basis.

I'm a diehard track and AutoX guy, and yet I still went with a GTS because I still spend 95% of my driving time on the street. Same reason I didn't order the bucket seats!

Does the GTS have added sound deadening material?

I disagree with many here, I have GT4, daily drive it, take it to track, take it to pickup McDonald’s, etc and that sound of the naturally aspirated engine is beyond awesomeness, but I did add Soul OAP, truly makes the car sound as it should. I test drove a 992S, it felt big, heavy and the engine sound and feel was blah, felt like it was missing a soul, totally opposite of the GT4. Every time I go drive it, when I get out of the car, I have a huge smile on my face. I listen to music, no issues, I make phone calls, just fine, but can’t be zipping in canyons, just gotta cruise and you are fine.

It's more accurate to say the GT4 has almost no sound deadening material. You can still have a conversation within a GT4, but you'll be speaking at a higher voice. If driving feel is top priority, the GT4 is hard to beat. If daily driving, the GTS is a better choice (you get more luxury options with the GTS that aren't available in the GT4).

I'm a serious track guy. I've modded a bunch of my P-cars and happily used them as my daily driver and track car. I bought a '20 GT4 to be a daily drive only -- no track use.

Verdict: Great Car, fabulous handling, very jarring suspension and much cabin noise. I traded it in for a '21 Boxster GTS, which is infinitely more suitable as a street car IMO. It cures all the negatives and leaves the positives.

A QUESTION: I never had a Cayman before the GT4. I've had 4 Boxsters over the years. Is the Cayman's interior noise worse than the Boxsters, and if so would this be due to the fact that the engine is actually inside the cabin, unlike the Boxster where it is behind a firewall?

very jarring suspension? That’s a bit extreme. I find the suspension absolutely great. If you wanna really add extra comfort, get Michelin Sport 4S tires, those are absolutely brilliant, they reduce road noise by a ton and ride much softer. The Dunlap SportMaxx Race 2 tires are much harder compound, tires make huge difference. To me, switching to Sport 4S tires reduced noise by about 50%

I have now driven all 3 tires on my GT4, the Dunlap Race2, the Michelin Cup2 and Michelin Sport 4S. In F1 terms, the Sports 4S are the reds, the Cup2's are yellow and Dunlap are the blacks, LOL. In cold temps and canyons, for comfort and best grip, Sports 4S, the medium weather, bit noisier, Cup2's and in warmer/hot weather, absolutely the Dunlap Race2 tires, they are just incredible, they just stick the entire session.

OPF Delete pipes seem to be the most popular exhaust mod by far and I will be doing that as well, along with Soul Street Headers/Cats. Speaking of OPF deletes: https://rennlist.com/forums/market/1259664

Vis a vis cabin noise, please take my opinion with a grain of salt because (i) the sum total of my experience in a GT4 is a 20-mile drive from my dealer to the detailer; and (ii) my other car is an '05 Lotus Elise with a supercharger, headers, and a 2bular exhaust. But I think the cabin noise in the GT4 (even with the sound symposer) is pretty darn quiet. My FJ Cruiser is louder.

I dug out a few of my older Car and Driver's and looked up their sound level data at 70mph for a few recent Porsches.

Taycan: 66dba
Boxster: 71dba
Cayman S: 73dba
Cayman GTS 4.0: 73dba
718 Cayman GT4: 77dba
911 GT2 RS: 79dba

I'm a bit hearing impaired and need to be careful with being around loud noises (like I don't go to concerts and always wear earplugs when mowing the lawn) and I found that anything above 76dba on the highway (like when I'm out in a Miata) is 100% earplug season for me (it just becomes pretty uncomfortable for me). I had a 992 911S for a day earlier this week and at 70mph I'd say it's just under what I consider tolerable (likely around 72-74dba). I personally, wouldn't go much beyond that for a daily driver - I don't want to wear ear plugs for every day driving.
