OK found the problem., As mentioned in my post #13, the latch was closed even tho it was 4” from closing.
As a long shot, I popped off the cover to the latch mechanism, and used a screwdriver to manually open the latch using the screw head there.
Tried it now that the latch was open, and it works perfectly.
Guess its brains got scrambled a bit?
