The model numbers, just learned something
Hey all,
Current owner of a 997.2S and a Macan GTS.
Macan has the oil leak, engine removal req'd and it'll take about a month at the dealer.
Porsche of Livermore gave me a new Boxster loaner......here goes lol
I"ve always been a Boxster/Cayman fan and have been casually looking for a Boxster for my wife. One drive and she fell in Love (she has always been a VW girl with her favorite owned car being a 74' Karmann Ghia). While we are not "loaded" we are fairly comfortable (loaded in the eyes of the world right?), the hunting begins.
So, being a 911 enthusiast (but definitely not an expert) and knowing the factory model numbers, I noticed something while I was doing research for this next possible purchase:
996 is the 911 Carrera of 1999-2004, the Boxster is 986
997 Carrera, roughly same vintage, Boxster/Cayman is 987
991 is the 981, again, roughly same vintage
992 is the 982 known as the 718 (What is the thinking behind that? lol)
You substitute the 9 for an 8 and you have traded the rough ages and grouppe types.....Never realized or saw this before.
Is this correct? Also, what/where is a good read source on this?
One problem with today is absolute information overload, a buddy calls it "analysis paralysis".
Anyways, cheers, Mike

By that same definition the 718 aka 982 is *not* the same “vintage” as the 992. Thank %$^&ing god.
