Default Credit check while ordering custom Cayman

I just recently ordered a Cayman T and the SA performed a credit check during the ordering process. He didn’t tell me anything at that point and I only realized later. Is that normal?

I also gave a 5k deposit which seems high but I’ve read it’s normal if you don’t have a relationship with the dealer.

Are you getting financing? I paid $1000 refundable deposit, then $4000 more non refundable once they had the allocation and could actually place my order. No credit check as far as I know.

I mentioned I was open to financing if the rates were good otherwise I would pay cash. Didn’t expect them to perform a check based on that.

They said they had an allocation so I just paid the 5k up front, that said I’m doubting they do since I still don’t have a V200.

Thanks for the answer

My dealer ran a credit check when I put down my deposit. I am thinking they did it as I was completely new to the dealership and they wanted some assurance that I could afford the car.

Did you give them your SSN? They would need your permission to run your credit. And I have not had that happen, and I wrote personal checks for my last few new vehicles but maybe it is a Florida thing.

Yes I did give them my SSN although they didn’t explain why. I should have probably asked about it but I was trying to make up my mind about some last minute option changes.

As someone above mentioned it seems it was just to make sure I could afford the car although I do wish the SA would have been more upfront about it .

Anyway thanks to everyone who replied.

Why not ask your sa why he is running your credit. Also check your documents to see of that was disclosed. If it wasnt, id be pretty annoyed.

Unsure what the mystery is here...OP said he was open to financing and gave the dealership his SSAN.

I ordered a new Porsche last summer,
paid deposit at allocation. When asked about financing declined...no credit check needed.

It’s pretty common for dealerships to get started at exploring your financing options as soon as you express an interest in it with the rest of the purchasing process. They make a lot of money on financing deals and are quite eager to help you borrow money.

I traded in a car and they have a lot of my money. They said that $5000 from the trade would become a non refundable deposit once the order locked on a custom GT car as this is their policy. They also said if I had some kind of emergency I could get the $5K back if they can sell my car at MSRP and less back if they cannot

A family member is ordering a GT3, they required $1K now and $4K more when his order locks.

Even if you're paying cash, they will still often run a credit check to see who they're dealing with.

All this being said - it was hopefully just a soft pull which should end up having 0 effect on any score.
Interest in financing + giving SSN, they probably assumed you knew what that meant.

Pretty standard. I've had them check even when paying cash.
