Many others with more in-depth engine knowledge will reply. Most will tell you IMS issues are rare with 2008 engines. Throwing in my experience for reference: Purchased an 08 CS with Tiptronic in late 2016. 10 + track days, at least 12 autocross days with two drivers, and not one IMS issue.

- Sounds like you've done you're homework, so make an informed (not emotional) decision.
- Something I'd like to add, I would bet that the incidence of "problems" is higher in cars for sale than the all cars as a group.
- As many wise men before me have said--caveat emptor.

IMS failure rate is very low, like around 1%, so I wouldn't worry too much. You can't just "pull the seal off bearing", you'd have to pull the engine to get it (unlike the previous generation Boxster 986, where you could replace the older and more failure prone IMS). Since it is a 10+ year old car, plenty of other things to worry about, so get a PPI.

2008 Cayman still used the M97 - ‘IMS-issue’ - engine. 2009 is the first MY of the MA1 / 9A1 engine.

Dude, you continue to post in this thread which is not in the forum that pertains to the car about which you ask questions. This forum is for the 718 which is three generations newer than a 2008 987.1 Cayman.

You will get more, better, answers in one of these forums:
