Default 2017 Boxster Wheels rubbing

Hi all,

I recently purchased a 2017 Boxster base with 235/40ZR19 yokohamas on. When taking tight turns in the parking lot, I hear rubbing sound (not quite sure, also sounds like the tires sliding). Does anyone have any insight on this? Thanks all!

It’s just the front tires slipping on the pavement slightly. My 2018 Cayman does the same thing. It’s most noticeable making tight turns when the tires are cold.

Yes, common, especially with summer tires used below 40 degrees F. A number of threads on various forums discussing the physics of this and the general topic of summer tires in the cold.

my 2019 718 Boxter s does the same thing. I believe the engineering on this is that the turning ratio for the "inside wheel" (inside wheel defined as the wheel in the direction of the turn) is different than the outside wheel, therefore one wheel will skip on the pavement until they can get in sync with each other as the wheels catch up with each other as they goe around. Not dissimilar to the ratio differential in a 4 wheel drive vehicle that hops across the pavement as you turn on the 4 wheel drive.

I'm not sure I follow though.. These examples are the result of a limited slip diff. Can't possibly be one up front in the 718. Mine skid a bit as I back out of my driveway and turn sharply (as noted above, especially in winter).

Totally normal. Expected with big front tires. Nothing directly to do with limited slip or not, unless the LSD is locked up at a high ratio (i.e. broken.)
