It depends...do you want to drive a car now or wait until ... whenever?
They are not mutually exclusive and having the 981 may help you get a 718.
Life is short and there are great opportunities in 981 GT4s now.

Rumour has it that the 781 GT4 is a 2020 car so you wont be able to take delivery to mid-2019 if true. Lots of time to enjoy 981GT4. Plus now is a good time to buy with many coming up for sale with people trading up to GT3. Can also help build relationship with dealer for 781 GT4 allocation with purchase/trade-in.

If you want to drive the Best mid engined car with a warranty now/ get one. You can always trade it in later and work the dealership to get an allocation as the GT4's especially early models will not be sitting in dealer stock- all pre ordered and there is a waiting list probably.

If you want a 718 Cayman S, that's another great alternative as the performance window of that car very closely matches that of the outgoing GT4. I have a pretty great selection at the moment and would be happy to help you out on one

This. There are plenty of great pre-owned GT4's currently floating around as most of the guys are hopping into GT3's.

Performance on the 981 GT4 and the 718 S is essentially the same. GT4 sounds better. 718S is cheaper and can be configured as you'd want it. No *actual* details yet on the engine for a 718 GT4 to say nothing of release date or cost. So your answer is......... "not to be found from the likes of us lurking in these forums." Drive them. Buy what you love.

Lots of folks want to wait for 718 GT4. I don't understand why anyone thinks this will be easy or cheap to attain (in terms of ADM). It will be 2 years before they are reasonably attainable. GT4s, on the other hand, are creeping downward in value. $85-90k can get you a 981 GT4.

GT4 Sighting
I don't know if the word is out, but the GT4 is testing in Colorado. Black GT4 with carbon ceramic brakes, sporting Georgia plates was driving around Dillon, Colorado today. High altitude testing, I assume. It never got above 25 mph (or probably 2500 rpm, so I can't report anything on the engine note. The driver was shutting it off at every stoplight (or the car was doing it...). Anyway, it pretty much made my day!

The GT4's really are a good buy right now. Pretty low risk to hold and then trade up if you really want the new one later. I think the 718 will be a higher cost of ownership during that same period, and not sound as good.
