Default hesitation just off idle./ I passed smog in California w/o a CAT

She idles at about 900 RPM. When I stab the gas it hesitates for just a second. When I let off the gas it dips below 900 for a second and then bounces back up. Still doesn't start at first turn of the key. Any ideas would help. Please, ask questions.

Could it just be running lean now?

Mine was having a problem catching itself after reving but I didn't have the hesitation. The tried everything to fix it. Turned out to be a leak in the intake manifold.

That is what I think. I did all the gaskets and the boot, but I think one of the hoses on the back of the throtle body may still be leaking. Is there a spray that is better for testing that is better than brake cleaner?

You could try propane like that found in those small blue torches. However, please use it outside on a day with wind. When things go wrong with this method they go very wrong.

I hope you are kidding.....but no. Instead of spraying brake fluid everywhere you instead spray propane(un-lit) everywhere. The advantages are it is less messy and may or may not work better. Disadvantages are you could catch on fire....or just generally blow up.

What about spray it down with soapy water, and look for the bubbles?

Hmmmmmm doesn't qualify as a question, but it's my first thought. What does "stab" the gas mean: (1) Unloaded in neutral?, (2) Loaded immediately following clutch release? If #1, it's not a fair test that might be outside the capability of the car to deal with. If #2, the answer might be the same with "don't let the revs drop so low during initial motion." Which chip is in the car now? Has the cold start improved since the reseal? Are you sure that the throttle body equipment (electrical & mechanical) is all adjusted correctly (I go back to when someone tightened the CC cable in order to create a "false" idle)? Have you checked if the door in the air flow meter swings smooth?

#1 unloaded in neutral.
stock chip. I was offered a "new version" of the chip I have, but it hasn't shown....
cold start has not improved.
I am not totally sure it swings free. It wasn't that hard to move when I did the rebuild.

So I go to get lunch and some 100 octane. The owner of the VPRacing station is in and always wants to talk. (he had a turbo back in the day) I asked him if his smog test equipment could test air/fuel ratio. He said yes. I said how much. He said $30. I'm in the shop connected to the sniffer and running on the dyno in no time. Well, after a couple of minutes the tech guy comes over and says that I pass smog no problem. Well that is great, but I don't care about that at this point. He shows me the numbers the DMV looks at. the Hydrocarbons is the big one and it needs to be below 100ppm. Mine: 71ppm. Cool. Co was 0.7%, Co2 was at 12.9%, and the big # I really liked was the 240 foot pounds of torque. I don't know why that fits into smog, but I saw it and asked and he said that it was that kind of torque. All in all he was very impressed with my car. I was out $30.00 and no AFR. He didn't want to give me a print out.

240 ft-lbs of torque? Didn't it come stock with about 200 from the engine? It was torques in metric units was it?

I gotta look at some of Fred's posts on HP and torque. it was foot pounds. that don't sound metric. it showed HP too but I didn't see it any higher than 79 when I was looking. He only had the car in second and didn't really give it that much gas so who knows????

Try Ether, it is very volitile and works great for finding those pesky leaks, I found it at Autozone.

Congrats on passing smog without the CAT, I hope I will be able to do that too.

Steve Wong helped me with my "sub-dips" by leaning the AFM, drive around and half a turn at a time. It helped allot and now the AC does not effect the idle at all. After the adjustment, check your base idle.

Those numbers, and NO CAT? Wow...

When you check the "door" just be sure that its initial movement is smooth...

Cheers!

did you recently wash your car? perhaps there is some moisture in your cap/rotor... Mine had similar hesitation... cap and rotor replacement fixed it... just an idea...
