Default debris found in 5spd transmission

can anyone tell me what these bits are? the longest is about an inch long. these are from an 1984 5spd which i bought in germany from a reputable breaker and has low mileage. the gearbox is destined for my 1979 3spd auto.

in the second picture is the transmission cover on which there is a part which i am wondering might have held the fragmented parts i have found. any ideas?

I'm thinking that might be the reverse gear lockout mechanism.

Yip, I agree, reverse gear lockout mechanism. Nick, have you got PET? If so you'll see the pictures that identify these parts. I'll see if I can email you a pdf version of PET (for a 91, but the lock-out stuff looks like your photos).

From past posts ieems like it's not an uncommon thing to find in the oil of a manual 928 g'box.

Cheers

Dave

Nick, I've emailed to your pvt email address the full pdf PET parts list that I have. (not being too bright, found it impossible to extract just the relevant pages).

mmmmm... it dosent look that good from the other posts ive looked at. i can convince myself that the smaller parts are broken fragments of the reverse lockout mechanism, but i cant identify the longer piece. more than that it seems that normaly the spring breaks rather than the other part, and others report total transmission loss through having that part go through the box. the broken pieces i have have definitely been through some gears... anyone else have an opinion?

First of all you have '85-86 MY gearbox, not '84.

Long piece on top left looks like part of flat spring which forces lever to neutral position between 4th and 5th. Its almost as common problem in '85-95 boxes as reverse gear lock is on '82-95 and selector coil spring are in '78-84. '85-86 uses different spring than '87-95. Older style might not be as easily available as later part. Later can't be used as substitute. '87-95 put lever between 2nd and 3rd so upgrade might not be too bad idea but it get complicated and expensive.

Reverse gear lock pieces look bad. Usually its just small flat spring which brokes off. Yours looks ok while rest of the system is in pieces.

My quess is that larger spring went first and pieces of it fell between gears which then took out reverse gear lock system parts too.

erkka, im glad you guys are here! how do you identify it as an 85-86 box? the box came from a modified car i think it might have been a strosek.. cant remember but i should find out. my mechanic says we should rinse it out and see what else comes out but that it might be ok to just run it, any advice?

'78-84 boxes do not have that thing ing up high in middle of your third pic. '87-95 has different setup there.

You really need to take it totally apart and check everything. Some boxes have has cracked castings after similar disaster. Besided if you want to have any feel on selector you need to replace that large flat spring.

Read trough this entire thread and few others linking in it to get better picture whats inside. Just keep in mind that some info is not valid in your case. Especially '78-84 syncro stuff.

erkka, i had a look through the thread and i am having trouble to find a picture of the 'large flat spring'. ive found pics of the reverse lockout thing that goes on the inside of the cover, like in my pic number two - is the large spring something different again? what about retrofitting the springs like in the early style box that wrap around the selector rod? im sure the box is marked G28.07 - but its in manchester and im 3hours south so i will check later.

Yes, totally different part. I meant to put link to this thread:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/349802-rebuilding-1988-manual-transaxle-after-wasting-2710-at-local-shop.html

This is what caused it.

Spring in first pic is from my under 100k miles driven GTS gearbox. Second pic shows used springs from GTS and relatives '85 S gearbox. That spring should really be changed on all '85-95 gearboxes every 5 years to prevent cracking from happening. Its only matter of time when every one of these boxes go through this failure.

Gear selectror on all manual gearboxes should always be left into either gear closest to neutral position if some gear is left selected when car is not driven. This would save from many problems.

what about retrofitting the springs like in the early style box that wrap around the selector rod?
It would work but require non stock mod to get lever between 2nd and 3rd on neutral. You are probably used to such setup with late manuals.

im sure the box is marked G28.07 - but its in manchester and im 3hours south so i will check later.
It has to be G28/10 or 11. Casting is different than earlier boxes. If its 07 someone changed it I think.

excellent link. now i really need to go back and look at the tranny to see what happened to the other three quarters of this spring! i will be making contact with the guy who sold the transmission to ask for a bit more information on its history.

You are lucky as many people have had their gearboxes go south as the gears grind up that spring. Go and buy a lottery ticket!

Impressive information, Erkka...I knew you would have it.

You know, I just bought a 76 GoldWing. There is a growing community around that bike, but NOTHING like the community here. BIG kudos to Erkka and all the others who have such great knowledge to share about the 928.
