Default A few 928 questions/thoughts

In my fantasizing about the 928, a few thoughts came to mind:
-When did Porsche add cruise control to these cars? On the 86.5 I looked at, I didn't see a stalk with cruise on it. I don't even remember if cruise was invented then. Where is the cruise control located on your cars?
-In the back left of the car is a storage bin for the spare tire. What is on the back right side of the car? Any more storage space back there?
-Is there enough space to carry a clothes basket in the hatchback (LOL, don't ask)?
-Are those rear seats actually functional? They seemed to be in Risky Business. I couldn't really see much leg room behind the front seats.
-The 86.5 I saw had skinny 16" wheels. How does this 1.5 ton car handle with such a seemingly small amount of rubber on the road? I thought the wheels were beautiful (mirror-like with the Porsche symbol on them), but they seemed small.
-Why so many automatic trannys out there?
-I asked this before, but I'm still not sure: Do you guys have to put in the high octane gas for the stock engines?

My '79 has cruise. Never tried it though.

YEs, particularly if the back seats are down. I normally drive with the back seats down (creates larger cargo area) and I have plenty of space for everyday type things.

Tom Cruise is short. I'm sure the fronts are slid all the way forward. They are functional but with minimal leg room. I wouldn't plan on any long trips.

I think mine handles great; tire quality is important.

They're luxury sport vehicles. And they're GT's. Manual trannies aren't that important at 90 mph.

I had my wrench advance my spark 2 degrees, and intend to run 91 octane. Before that it ran fine on low octane. But I get better mileage with advance/premium gas. Premium only costs about 3% more, and I get at least 5% better mileage. That's free money and more fun.

I would add that the rear seats are far more practical for kids than adults.

LOL, for some reason I don't see the 928 as the traditional baby-hauler

my 81 has cruise control, works great
I also have 16 inch wheels, if you do not think they hold the road well then meet me some time at the Nurburgring - you come with any size wheels you like. Then we will see who gets around the Ring quicker...

She doesn't talk yet, but I'm pretty sure of this nonetheless.

Chaadster, of course your baby loves the 928...Who wouldn't?

Edit: Chaad, great job on your 928 website. I think I drooled a little looking at the interior pics I guess you got rid of your spare tire and dropped the sub in the back?

Eclise,

Thanks for the compliment. Yeah, the sub is surface mounted on the spare well cover, and the frame/magnet dips into the well a bit, but I've got a small amp, bridged for mono, running it stashed in the space too. The factory speakers are driven off the in-dash unit. It's a tidy, solid sounding setup, but far from remarkable.

I carry the collapsible spare in the hatch area when I'm venturing outside of town, but always have a couple of cans of tire goop in the car.

Eclise,

Cruise control has been around a long time, it's just 'evolved' a bit.

My old '71 Fiat 850 had cruise control. It consisted of a cable attached to the throttle at one end and a twist **** that attached under the dash (like the throttle **** on a small airplane). You would pull it out to the desired RPMs, then twist it to lock it there. If you had to slow down in a hurry it was: clutch, REVVVVV, fiddle fiddle fiddle trying to untwist, then push it in.

It seems it's in all model years of 928, but the early ones were vacuum actuated (as were most other things) and a headache to keep it working. Mine is electrical, and a pain to keep working.

I've removed the rear seats as have some others. Do a search on 'Rear seat delete' for more. The ones that are back there are functional and better than, say, a 280z IMO, but for me they weren't worth having.

Think cruise works on vacuum so any vacuum issues may interfere with the system.
Tried cruise a few times. Holds speed nicely.
But I'm the modulate speed with right foot type of guy. Seldom use cruise even on long trips.

I've got no rear A/C so the sub amp hides in the rear cubby hole.
10" sub over the spare. Fits if sub is less than 5" deep.
Got can or tiregoop as well. Now I'm wondering what's the survival life of tiregoop that's in an automobile interior environment.

928 rides pretty nicely on 225 16". Sticks decently with modern rubber.

225/45 17 rear, 175/55 16 front

NJSharkFan: Thanks for the info on cruise control. I didn't know it was that old of a "technology." As for the rear seats, when I gets me 928, I'm not gonna remove them. I LOVE the rear seats in this car. The pod in the center, bucket seats with ribs, emmm, emmm!

Ew928: I'm mostly a right-foot-control-speed kinda guy, too. I do have to travel quite a bit, though, and my foot tends to get a bit heavy on the throttle...the cops around here seem to appreciate my form of cruise control, as they have stopped me more than once and told me so I hope I can find a 928 with the AC in the back, I think that is really neat. As for 225 rubber, I went and looked at my Elise; turns out it has only 175/55 16's in the front! But it does have 225/45 17's in the rear. The front tires seem really thin compared to the 928's wheels that I saw. The Elise does weigh considerably less, though. I remember an old Lambo Countach poster I had on my wall growing up that had 15 inch wheels, LOL.
