It's official, I'm in the market for a 356...
So I sold a few of my cars and I am now looking for a 356. Any leads would be appreciated.
I am looking for a very clean coupe with OG sheetmetal, no welded on abortions. Any year considered. Light exterior color would be a plus (I have a strong dislike for red and black). Open to most interior colors. Car must be 100% complete and driveable. My ideal car would be a virgin California car with OG paint and interior but that presents itself well as a +++ driving survivor.
Current budget is around $50K buy may fluctuate up or down depending on the vehicle.
I'm watching the usual sites (eBay, 356 registry, etc)...
Let me know what you see. There was a cool mid 50's black 356 driver for sale in the Bay Area but I can't seem to find the ad anymore. Anyone know the car I'm talking about?

You should be able to find something decent for that dollar as long as you don't want a pre A. I would certainly try and narrow the choice down to a pre-A, A, B or C model. The B will be the least expensive. Cs have disc brakes but you might not care. The A model is very popular because many find it better looking.
IMHO I would try and network and buy something unadvertised especially if you are looking for an A. I think you'll get a better deal and not have to deal with a crowd of other guys looking at the same car.
I think white is as popular as red (these were the top 2 colors in some years). I think you know your classic cars so you know to watch for all the nasty things that have happened to these cars over the last 55 years or so. I'm working on one of those now but I knew what I was buying and was dealing with a much lower budget.

if I were seeking a deal I'd consider a non-CA example, after a thorough ppi by a 356 chassis expert, instructing him "I want a CA high-std condition car..." I'd rate physical condition & known history above all else... you can put disc brakes on a B/T5 & you can get SC (or above) perf out of almost any 1600 (w/ $ injection). only about 2800 '61 Coupes made - kinda rare but not in great demand. check Bob Cambell, European Collectables, Willhoit's & CA Porsche Resto. & enjoy!

Search is over (for now at least). I bought a 1962 Karmann Hardtop, Oslo blue with fawn interior. S/N 202137 was restored about 20 years ago and needs some detailing and misc restoration. Lots of paperwork including original manuals included in purchase. Photos to follow a little later...

Beautiful car - congrats on a great find! If you don't mind, please post or PM what you paid for it. I have a budget in mind for a very nice driver (not a garage queen). I'd like to know if I'm in the ballpark...

Notches are cool. They don't seem to come up for sale very often. It looks to be in much better shape than the last one I looked at. It had been hit so hard the front fender was bowed ruining the lines down the side.

Sweet looking car!!! Congratulations! Oslo Blue is one of my favorite 356 colors. I have come to like notches more and more, and I also think they are gaining in respect and value.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!

I didn't see it at the Reunion, or was I looking in the wrong place?
Did I see YOU at the Beer garden?
Notchbacks have grown on me too, and Robert has the inkling for one......

I was there all three days but the 356 was only at the event on Saturday parked in the Coral. My 993 was parked in the 993 section. Didn't make the Biergarten but met up with a few other RL'ers.
