Default Thinking about buying a 356.

I have been kicking around the idea of buying a 356 for a while now. My main questions area: What does the market look like? How hard is it to find a really nice unmolested car (no rust ever, as OG as possible, etc...)? My brain is telling me to look for a well sorted stock driver that is already done vs. restoring one myself. I currently have a few projects apart and don't want another right now. Year and color are not as important as quality. If you know of anything available please PM me.

I just bought a '58 Coupe (356A). There are certainly differences in the market between coupes, cabs, speedsters, pre A/A/B/Cs. Based on my search you won't find a well sorted B for under $30K - $35k. The prices go on up from there. I would certainly spend some time at the 356Registry forum.

Matt... Thanks for the information. Please send me some pictures of your new addition.

I kind of like the look of the Karmann Coupe's. How are they viewed by the community?

It seems like some of the 356 guys like their old VWs too. I know of a couple of guys that have 23 window buses.

They seem to be much more related to VW's than to 911's. I just got back from the VW Classic in California. One of the German Folks has an awesome 356. Check it out:

The Karmann Coupes may have once been viewed as the ugly stepsister, but I think they have been gaining in popularity and regard over the past several years. If you like them, go for it!

Where are you located? There is a great annual 356 concours in Dana Point, California next month. LOTS and LOTS of 356s there and typically some for sale. http://356club.org/Flyers/DanaPoint2011.pdf I try to go every year, nice event, great location.

I live in Miami but I spend quite a bit of time in SoCal. I'll check out the dates to see if I can make it out to the event...

I am considering purchasing the above car and would appreciate opinions from other 356 owners.

Thank you.

One owner SC sunroof coupe. No restoration-- does that mean original paint? White isn't my favorite. Not cheap, but could be worth it if it is truly nice.

If you are serious about a 356, we should talk, I'd be happy to give you my input from 5 years of 356 ownership. PM me. And send the "real" pics of your nursery photo shoot!

Buy James E. Schrager's book: "Buying, driving and enjoying the Porsche 356." Hood gaps in photo look a bit off. Mite be the photo.
