Dry sump oil system?
I bought a 62 B coupe recently. I am trying to learn about 356. Does it have dry sump oil system like 911? To check oil level ,do i need to run the car for full warm up? When I check oil level w/o running ,it is overfilled .Does it cause problem to the engine? Thank you.
356 motors (usually a "Type 616" of some variety) are wet-sump.
so, you check the oil like "any ol' car" - not running, level ground, via the dipstick, cold ok.
"When I check oil level w/o running ,it is overfilled"
if it is more than half a qt high (the lines are a qt apart), I'd consider draining to bring down to proper level - esp if you run it at high rpm (& who wouldn't?).
will overfilling cause a problem? depends / maybe not, but do you want to run that experiment for us on your new investment?
I highly recommend you get an Owner's Manual & check into the 356 Registry...

Should i make it as tight as I can get it, so i have to be an angry Hulk Hogan to get it back off?The last time i changed my car's Oil, I "Snugged" it. I then noticed drips coming from where the Drain Pan Bolt is. So i tightened it up some more, but some Drips remained. The Drain Pan Bolt also fell in some Gravel and i put it back on very quickly.Does that mean that there maybe was some Gravel caught in the Head of the bolt, and that's why i had a super-slow Drip?It was coming from right where the Bolt was, so i don't think i put it back on tight enough. My car has a dry-sump system.
