Default Trade My Speedster for an RS??

x-post from the 997 GT3 forum...

Tomorrow I board a plane to an undisclosed top secret location to “test drive” an ’07 RS. If all goes as I expect I will drive it home, including a stop Thursday at Thunderhill for a race car test day. No track time for the RS though.

The trade-off, both for garage space and finances, will be the sale of my ’58 Speedster. I’m not sure how smart this is, trading what has been a quickly appreciating asset for one that is bound to go down in value, at least in the short term. On the other hand, I’m sure I will drive the RS a lot more than I’ve driven the Speedster.

You only live once, right? What would you do?

Tough call, but if it was me, I'd probably make the trade. Anybody got an RS to trade for a 60 Coupe??

the RS is going to depreciate, unless its a 73 RS. keep the speedster.. it will continue to appreciate in value.

Mark....

I'll sell the 993 and the A Coupe AND the Cayenne S to make room for your Speedster in our garage...............

You know how I feel about selling Max (still sad). If you aren't attached to the Speedster, go ahead. If you are HOLD ON. It's not like comapring a Doxie to a Doxie. It's more like comparing a Doxie to a Doberman!!!! We'd love to have an RS, but it's not the same as having an old classic...... yet............

................ but then you have a lot of old classics............. hmmmmmm..............

if you want to drive alot & track/compete, the RS is the way to go.
if the speedster has appreciated, you need the cash & aren't in love w/ it, why keep it anyway?
later, you can always pick up a cheap 356,
when you get over the RS.

More fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.....

Mark, If you can mentally handle the depreciation of the GT3RS, then I would sell the Speedster and upgrade.

Based on your SIG, you already have a few 356's, early 911's, and if I recall even a 73RS a while back ago. You might as well experience the latest and greatest "streetable" P-car ever released in the USA.

And if you get bored with your GT3 in a few years, the depreciation of the GT3 should be partially offset with whatever appreciation you've already had with the Speedster...

That is my logic (or illogic), I'm buying the RS for the money I have into the Speedster, a big discount on the RS.

To me the Speedster is the Ultimate early Porsche, and yours is the perfect color too. Keep it.

Hey Mark...as long as you replace one P-car for another one...after all we don't want to lower Bend's "Porsche per capita ratio"...whats the ratio now? Around one for each 4 citizens ? Just talking about 1960 Roadster...at least 3...John Audette's Mouse and yours... and besides tons of Porsches, you guys have Black Butte Porter...hell of a city!!!!

Your Speedster is amazing...if you decide to close the deal...get a responsible custodian for the old German...

As far as the GT3RS...is it worth the 20Gs over the GT3? They look very similar (performance) and neither will become classics...

Mark, if you can swing it, you might try to hold onto the 356 long enough to determine if you're going to want to keep the RS for the long haul (a coupla seasons?). there will always be a new GT3-type 911 for dual-use from Porsche, there will never be another speedster - thus the investment value. enjoy the RS - what a car!

another great article by Jim Schrager in the current Registry that touches on investment grade vs driver 356s...
