Folks,

I am planning to pick up my Damen 1959 T2 Sunroof Coupe near Detroit by mid September and drive it from there down to Miami.

It is close to 1.500 miles drive in case I get the fast lane or 2.500 in case I drive at the ocean side (East Coast)… Decision will be made after reading your recommendations.

I will do the trip with another 356er friend of mine or in case he is not available for the tour, alone… My wife would dump me for the invitation alone, and she is full of duties on Monday…

I plan to leave from Troy, MI on a Saturday morning and would like to get in Miami not latter than Monday night…

Is there any route that I should avoid or should use to enjoy a beautiful view/drive, any special recommendations? The car (a driver) is being mechanically checked and should be in good shape to do the travel. It is going to be my first drive with this car.

My intention is to enjoy the long drive in a classic Porsche, but I have to get back to work on Tuesday morning – hopefully with a large smile on my face!

Recommendations (all types) are very welcome!

I have no value to add with respect to an actual route, but I will say that I purchased my 993 in Seattle. I took 5 days and covered 3,200 miles driving it home to Baltimore - via Canada. An absolute trip of a lifetime.

I arrived at home around 2 am and had a wedding to attend six hours later..... that was close

AAA card and a cell phone. You've enough 356 experience to bring a 6v test lamp setup, spare distributor, coil, condenser, points, etc. And of course the 356 travel assistance network info from the Registry's website, and maybe some contact info from the folks between MI and MIA on 356talk. I know there are more than a few on your route(s).

It is all do-able. I've done NC to Florida quite a few times as a kid with Dad driving the 356, as well as N. Florida (gainesville) down to the keys and back. Dad drove the 356 to Cali a few times when it was relatively new (68 and 69), and at least once to Minnesota and back (with my older brother before I came along - so again, 68-70)

I drove from Tampa to Philly in less than 24 hours with my 356. As stated, bring tools, parts, jack, etc and hope you might not need them. That trip was only about 1000 miles but still pretty good for a 45+ year old car. And 30 mpg I might add.

If you can work in the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Tail of the Dragon it will be worth the slight detour. Enjoy!

you guys will make it no prob. please take pics! what a trip it will be... i did st.louis to l.a. in barely two days, 2600-2700mi. (in a 993 though w/ top down most of the way).

loved it & will buy a car across country to do it again.

keepin' the 356 cool will be imho the only challenge wish i was in the area to get you guys on film... how 'bout i fedex you my lil' HD camera?

i'd maaaaaaybe opt for the shorter route to aviod stress -or- take the longer to visually avoid stress.....

back in Jan 06, My father-in-law and I drove a 63 Super 90 from Santa Barbara to KC. Thanks to Schneider Auto Haus in Santa Barbara, they went through the car top to bottom - we left on Friday night and got home Sunday afternoon in plenty of time for me to start a new job on Monday morning. Didn't have a single problem, but lots of people had no idea it was a Porsche

Thanks for the support guys...24FPS...u are right...keeping the 356 cool in highway cruise speed is a challenge...fortunately Freddy ordered a new oil radiator, and is having it installed as we talk...the aluminum lightweight one from Mainely...due to my 356 experience...80mph is the key speed...the thin line between good and bad reading on the temperature gauge...

The problem is: Freddy is used to a 4 cam engine 356!!!!!

We'll definitely have great pics...from "Motor City" to the "Sunshine State"...

It is so nice to see this thread! I am counting the seconds for the day I will be picking up the car at Troy! I wish we will find time to stop by every great guy that wrote us here or at the 356 registry list

The car is getting ready and will be complete by mid September… I am adding some few missing things to the car such as:

4.5 wheels
165 SR15 tires
40 cms Derrington steering wheel
Shine up license plate light
Short Bumper guards
Front Turn signal wedges
Baby moon hubcaps
Etc…

We will post many pictures after the trip!!!
