Engine Serial Number Picture Needed!
Anyone have a picture of an engine serial number and the immediate surrounding area? I'm looking to purchase a "B" and the number doesn't look quite right- a somewhat smaller star appears immediately after the number (P*085609*) and the number is weird. Also, "MADE IN GERMANY" appears cast in raised letters immediately below the stamped numbers. I'm just want to compare what other's look like.
TIA

Jim, my SC has a replacement case, so no #s... Here's a link to the Registry's article on engine #s where there is a photo.

Schrager's book (a great resource for new 356 owners & seekers) has a photo on p44, but it isn't too clear. you could look through all the (real) 356s for sale on ebay - they often picture the engine & vin #s. you could also contact a 356 dealer like Bob Campbell or restorer like John Willhoit to discuss - maybe send a photo to analyze. the kit for numbering engines just like the factory used is available on the market, so a correct or matching engine # can be recreated (counterfeited?). a chain of documentary evidence (maint records, etc) would help to confirm a true original engine, but ultimately, almost nothing is 100% certain regarding engine #s on 40+ yr old Porsches. Good luck!

My car came w/ many mysteries when I got it 3 yrs ago. no engine ID symbols, letters or #s whatsoever - just a blank space. {but a strong SC motor w/ 912 heads & webers pumping a big 100hp that winds out to 6K... real matching #s are important for concours cars (which I greatly respect) ... or when a seller asserts a premium asking price is based upon that. I prefer a sound chassis, a solid drivetrain & that "356 feel" when driving - often w/ a lower price.}
