JoAnne, What was so special about Max?
Parden me coming late to this party, but you lament the loss of Max so often. I realize that Max was an outlaw - and the pictures I've seen are very cool. But, what about it made you love it so?
As I've indicated, I have had my '73 for 18 years, and my Boxster S for about 5 now, and I had a wonderful driving 356 B normal. (I also have had my great Sunbeam Alpine with more hp/lb than a Tiger for 28 years, but that's another story). My wife never took to the 356 like I thought she would. She does however love the 911 and says if any of my cars were ever to be sold, make that the last one.
I will say that the exhaust sound of the 356 never grabbed me like my 911 or my Alpine (admittedly with Webers, cam and racing headers/exhaust), both of which on high clip go straight to your soul. I even got the 356 an OEM muffler from Brad/NLA. But, it didn't really change anything. Maybe what I needed was a Bursch or something to give it some endearing growl.
Anyway, just looking to see what grabbed you on Max to see if I should keep any of those thoughts in mind when I get another 356.

Do you believe in Love at first sight?
Well I do, because I loved Max from the first time I saw him sitting against the wall at EC on that cold damp day In February of 2004.
Robert saw him first and came over into the shop to get me. I was floored when I saw him. Speechless… and that doesn't happen to me very often. Robert was literally drooling and I knew in that one magical moment that we HAD to have him. We bought him two hours later after going to lunch to "Think about it". We didn't have to think about it much. I think we decided before we even left the parking lot that, whatever it takes; we are going home with that monster of a car.
Max had car-isma like no other car I've ever come across before.
Max drove like a 993 in a 356 package. Everywhere we went, everyone wanted to see Max. He was different. It's hard to explain. Sheeze, Robert had goose bumps every single time he’d jump in and drive Max. I’d get on the cell phone and scream (had to scream to be heard) at my friends: “Can you guess where I’m at now”? “Listen”. “WE'RE IN MAX”! “YEEEEEE HAWWWWW”! I think I scared some new friends away after a few of those calls because I never heard from them again. That's okay. My real friends that know me well and know about my obsession with all things Porsche's just replied "Gee JoAnne , I can't hear a word you are saying". "Do you have ear plugs in your ears, 'cause if you don't you should".
He was an interesting specimen to begin with and then after we put our own unique stamp on him I felt like he was always going to be part of us. Don’t ask me why we sold him. Sheer Stupidity and Greed I guess. Yes, I miss him very much.
Am I out there or what?
No. I never inhaled....................

BTW: Max's Exhaust note would have grabbed you, and made you a little hard of hearing too if you were standing too close.

Ok, so then I'll double post to make it even. Thanks for the poetic tribute to Max. Any details on just how far from stock it was? What was special about the engine and suspension?

How far from Stock was he? Wow, there wasn't much stock left. Where do I start. Let's see..............................
Engine was a 914 Type IV built out to 2.6 liter. Estimated HP 185
741 Transmission
FuelSafe fuel cell gas tank built to GT specs.
Through the hood filler
Auxillary front mounted oil cooler
All Aeroquip plumbing
Heavy duty Koni shocks
12 Volt Electrical system
Carrera Brakes
Carrera Fuel pump
Interior had the following:
Full cage roll bar
Speedster seats
Simpson Safety harnesses (driver and passenger)
Plexiglass windows
Window cranks removed, leather straps installed
Custom Oil Temp, Fuel Pressure, and Voltmeter gages
All sound deadning was removed from car.
Rennline Aluminum Floor Boards
Custom Aluminum mounted fire extinguisher
Body mods:
Aluminum Louvered Engine Lid
Aluminum Hood with Leather straps
Headlight stone guards
I'm sure I've forgotten something, but looking at the list I think that was more than enough. LOL!!

Brett....
I bet you have already seen pictures of Max. Matter of fact, there are so many pictures of Max on this 356 forum that I'm embarassed to post them again in this thread. You can do a search of this forum and just type in Bad Max and he'll magically appear.
Okay...... Here's one so you know what the car you are searching for looks like:
