OH GOSH!!! Here we go again!!! No need bringing kit cars into this conversation as his Notchback is not a (plastic) kit car. It's an actual modified Porsche 356. I'm sure there were folks out there that thought what was done to Max was Sacreligious too. Tough.
Just enjoy your car. PERIOD.

I'm not knocking kit cars - I'm saying if they are valuable the de-roofed notchbacks must be valuable.
I think the the notchback is good car and I would not recommend chopping one myself. But if you want a cabrio this is clearly an economic way to do it and have a real 356.

Freddy, that's as nice a notch as I've seen! T5 chassis adds character, I think.
If people keep converting notches to open cars, notches will eventually rise in value, leading to a sort of "demand equilibrium" in the market. Somewhat similar thing happened w/ the Ferrari Daytona (though no one ever called the Coupes ugly, as some do the notch...).
It is getting harder to generalize about kits, since really well-executed replicars of "unobtanium" models (718, 904, 917 - I want a 910) are becoming more common. Given all the rusted out 356 / 901 chassis out there, we shouldn't be surprised.
Let's find a new topic for 356 controversy... they throw all the good ones off 356Talk...
"356 Owners: Crotchety Old Farts w/ Low Blood Sugar or True Enthusiasts?"

JoAnne, I don't consider that a controversy - more like a solution.

the best solutions are joint. like mixing up a batch of cocktails together.
have a great weekend (& don't forget... 9-17 (great #, eh?) is Drive Your 356 Day! - then cocktails...)

"At least it isn't togo brown (sorry couldn't resist)"
Steve, whaddaya think of starting a topic: "the fugliest 356" (sounds like a children's bedtime story)?
w/ everyone's input, we could achieve a consensus worst model, colors, options, etc. If anyone actually owned said example, there'd be a prize of some sort.
This could REALLY incite pointless debate, generate opposing camps, break up long-standing friendships - all in fun, of course.

The engine is so darn strong. As one of you mentioned, my car may actually be tighter due to the fixed roof holding it together for many years. Well, my recently sold 64SC Cab was not nearly as tight as my NON original Notch. I am amazed at the driving feel of this car...
Again, no one will know the value of these cars, but I am really struggling with spending money to get this up to snuff...for example, my Gas/Tem guage does not work. I can live without this for sure, but it would be nice to have fixed. There are a few other things like a new carpet kit and getting the radio fixed (original). I love the tool kit, although, one of the Klein screw drivers is missing as well as the NON orginal Nardi signed steeting wheel, looks so nice!
If as someone mentioned, these are 50% of a cabs value, then I have a very big bugdet to spent. I sold my Cab for 40K, 3 years ago, and it is now selling for 60K, in the same condition. That puts my Notch at ~30K, today, with the usual vintage car appreciation down the road. I never buy cars as investments and try to live by the "drive it and enjoy it" strategy, but after many, many Porsches, I find that I get the itch to sell/trade often and when it comes, I have to scratch!
Anyway, I am having a blast with the car.
WAZ, just over a year as a member, only 9 posts and you are giving me advice about online communities...I do not mean to personally call you out, but one of the reasons these forums exist is for members to share information. I have yet to require a Flack Jacket on any of the online communities I participate in...this may be 'your' experience with 'your' postings, but certainly not mine! I do think that you raise a good point about the value of the Originaly notch, as open tops increase in numbers, the hard tops may increase in value, thank you for this insight!
