From 1968 to 1992, I owned a 356 Speedster - Chassis #80013. As I understood it at the time, the first 100 Speedsters, chassis 80001 - 80100, were Pre-A (single mount 519 trans, 2-piece engine case, 16 in wheels) and subsequent cars were 356As. Now someone is advertising #80669 on eBay as a 1955 pre-A. Were there more than 100 pre-A Speedsters?
When I sold it, 80013 was going to cost more to restore than I got for it so I don't regret it letting it go but, if anyone has the info, I'd like to know where it finally ended up.

yes, 1234 Pre A Speedsters (retroactively named T0 chassis) were built for the '55 my. the subsequent A version was built until '59, about 3010 more produced. there's no entry for 80013 in the 356 Registry db of vin #s.
it is / was #13 of the Speedster run, potentially very valuable - but you are right, cost of car + restoration can exceed market value... even for a Speedster, even today.
