Anyone know what these panels are?
Are they factory or custom?
Also, has anyone been daring enough to put modified 930 style flares on a 356? How about a ducktail?

looks like a Gary Emory outlaw. see http://www.partsobsolete.com/ (the Emory's shop's website)
those 'access' areas were probably modified to be reminiscent of 550 spyders, 718 RS60's and most porsche race cars of that era that had 4 cam engines. i believe, but am not 100% sure (which is why i call them 'access' areas with quotes), that those openings were probably there for mechanics to have easier access to different parts of the engine, and perhaps even for access to the oil fill tank (if external in a 4 cam? just a wild *** guess), since the 4 cams were just a tad complex.
oh, and fwiw, gary has put 930 style fenders on 356s. i only wish i had a larger pic of this example

I'm sure RJT has a better explanation, or probably a correct answer. I bet he has a larger pic in his collection of a 356 with flares too. (and it does look suprisingly good, but not for those purists with heart conditions!)

That's a shot of "Farmer's 55", there was a wonderful write-up about the car in the November 2003 EXCELLENCE. The little louvered door in question is indeed for a slide-out ironing board. The car was specially built for a travelling salesman and 356 enthusiast who fancied staying at the KOA facilities while on the road. The slide out ironing board was only one of the many convenient camping features that were built into the car. The rear valance sported a drop down grill and camping stove, while passenger side rear quarter also housed a pull out hand-held shower neck inside the ironing board access panel.
All in all a nice "camping conversion."
Good guess on that ironing board hatch, Panzer ! !

Are these the kind of flares that you're looking for?

Yeah! Those are pretty bad azz....maybe a bit large for my tastes, but still deserving of props for trying something different.
So someone has done the flares....has anyone ever done a ducktail on a 356?
I can't find aything on this supposed "farmer 55"....i think maybe someone is pulling my leg.
Lastly, anyone got any pics of the 356 'streamliner'?
thanks to all.

The 'streamliner' i was thinking of is a different car.
It has wheel covers and it has louvered panels over the rear side windows.
The car is known as the '356 streamliner'. It is a split window coupe...it was built by Delwyn Mallet.
The only picture I can find online is in this article:

Panzer,
The "Farmer's 55" thing is legit, although I may have strayed off course with the whole ironing board/ camping business . . . but you opened up THAT door. The car had an EXTENSIVE article done on it in the November 2003 EXCELLENCE magazine. I'm looking at it right now. The base car is a '55 coupe #54089 that Emroy built for a commercial airline pilot named Jeff Hawthorne. It was originally built and configured for a land speed record attempt with gearing and wheel spats and all of that. I don't know how it all turned out, only what the magazine had to "say." The pictures are wonderful and the information and details extensive, you REALLY ought to get this issue if you can.
If Emory's web site was any good you could check there, but these days it's just a maze of broken picture links. VERY FRUSTRATING, and sad, because it used to be a wonderful resource . . .
Oh, here's an "in progress" pic of a Beetle whale tail being configured to fit on my 356, not a duck tail, but maybe close enough . . .

I need to shave it down to adjust the angle to horrizontal and tuck it in all over, but it might work out, but SHOULD it work out . . . ?
Luck,
TC

thanks for the info, TC.
But i still haven't gotten an answer for what those flaps are!
That whale tail is pretty wild! As to 'should it work out', I'd go with something smaller and more in scale with the car.

Oooppsss ! ! ! I'm sorry.
According to the magazine, "Behind the right rear fender metal lies a standard 911 dry-sump oil tank. A neat 550A-style, piano-hinged cover provides access to a remote NASCAR-type racing oil filter from RACOR. Rod painstakingly fabricated the cover and hand-cut the louvers himself, as well as those on the engine lid. Beneath the skin, the layout closely resembles a factor Carrera's oiling system."
And there's a sweet little close-up picture of the door raised to reveal the filter, tubing connectors and detail work on the inner flap's rolled edge and hinge.
VERY NICE!
