HA - you beat me to it!
Yes, amazing, doesn't even say if it is matching numbers. I went to BJ two years ago and I was amazed and the prices the 356's sold for - 20%+ over market for cars that should have been priced 30% below top quality car prices.

Add the 8% buyers commission and it's more like $135,000.00
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We have just decided to sell both our '55 Speedster and our '58 A Coupe
Best offer over $500,000.00

It is pretty ridiculous to see what these cars are selling for at auction...
Even eBay has had a smattering of terrifically overvalued cars lately...There was a C coupe that ended up getting bid to almost $50K---nice car, but jeez come on. It seems that lots of people that are going to auctions probably get caught up in the "this is my car, I will outbid you" thing...A few weeks ago a silver C coupe sold for $32K on eBay, and it had an incorrect Reutter Badge on the side panel AND in the door jamb with a serial number starting with 2....scary stuff.

Cole, doncha know? That was the VERY RARE AND SOUGHT AFTER half Karmann, half Reutter Coupe - known as the ReuttKarma Special. Geeeez, get with it...
JoAnne, you'd take a quick $450K cash, wouldn't you?

Someone on 356talk said Barrett Jackson is good, fun entertainment, but not reality. This may be true, but fact is an A cab is recorded on the books as selling for 125K. We have no idea whether or not the buyer REALLY knew what he was actually bidding on. He may have thought it was a Carrera 4 Cam Speedster! But I doubt it.
We've been to a bunch of auctions over the years, including the crazy late 80s when Rick Cole had the big auction in Monterey. We've seen ego's and bank accounts overrule rational thinking. It's easy to lose control when you are "in the moment" of wanting something more than the other guy. Especially when the other guy feels the same way.
We can debate the realness of 125K for an A cab. I can remember a friend buying a 550 spyder for 5 grand back in the mid 70s and NO ONE thought 550s would ever be worth hundreds of thousands like they are today. Same with Speedsters, I looked at a 58 in 1976 that was $7600 and I thought the guy selling it was NUTS. Guess who was nuts?
So. was this just an insane incident at B-J? Or did this really raise the bar of ALL 356s? I can't help but think that it might be a combination of both, leaning a little towards the insane.
But I'm still thinking about that 550 and 7600 dollar Speedster!!!!

I figured if I checked in the 356 Forum today that this would get discussed. I have watched every hour of B-J so far this week and am looking forward to the "real" high prices as we get into Friday and Saturday prime time ! It's definitely not a rational/sane way to set market value. Somebody paid $ 110,000 on Tuesday night (supposedly the "affordable night") for a Plymouth "Hemi recreation" - i.e. a hemi stuffed in a car that was not originally a hemi car. What does that mean that some folks will pay for all the real ones coming this weekend ?!
On the other hand, it looked there were a few low prices on several 930 Turbo and Turbo-cab's ......
Great automobile entertainment ! (and I did go buy an extra PowerBall and MegaMillions ticket today). Hey, I could be as insane as some of these folks !

I don't get it.....AT ALL....Am I missing something? You pay 135K for it at BJ and five days later put it on Ebay?????? He will be incredibly lucky to get half of what he paid! I don't get it!

I smell SCAM on that car being on eBay--there is very little info to back it up--I think someone just copied the details out of the BJ description and posted it on eBay...either that or we need to nominate the buyer at BJ for a Darwin Award because buying at BJ to flip onto eBay is pure insanity.

we watched most of the TV coverage this weekend as well, and Saturday really was the crazy - the top 5 on Friday was $205,000 to 200,000. Saturday it took $1,000,000 to break the top 5, and great cars were selling far below the prices seen on Saturday. (everyone was probably hung-over and broke!)
the pair of M-B 300SL's was a real surprise to me - that is just not the auction audience for european cars (356A cabs excepted of course). While $300,000 is a lot of money for a car, if you at what folks are asking for a 300SL Roadster on Hemmings, its more like $340,000+ and that car at B-J was restored by the M-B dealer in Toronto (as said on TV) now that's got to be expensive!!
anyway, still interesting, and I agree with Robert - it is establishing market value in people's mind's...

First off, I would never suggest due to legal entanglements that B-J is one giant shill fest. Because $4,000,000 for a bus seems completely reasonable.
I think what really happened was that Mister Big Spender sobered up in the morning between two hookers with a fresh tattoo on his ***, but realized the real pain he was feeling was overpaying for that 356. The first thing he did was back out of the deal and cancel the check. And because there are a variety of laws that protect the buyer on the sale of a car who changes his mind...
(Saw a big time WWF Wrestler get drunk and do the same thing at a charity auction a few years back. Really messed up my friend's benefit to help kids born with birth defects.)
...B-J got stuck with the car. Then B-J simply returned the "unsold" car to the owner but kept all his auction entry money. So, as usual, Craig Jackson's laughing all the way to the bank. And the disappointed owner who thought he made a killing on his car is forced to sell on ebay.
