We are considering a 356B
Please cut me just a little slack...
My wife's uncle (Tom) is considering buying his neighbor's 356B convertible. Tom sold his corvette and seems to be looking for car with a bit more his speed and with some style. He has two other daily drivers. This car would be used for 200 mile weekend trips to the lake. The owner said it has 165k miles and a rebuilt motor. Tom thought he said it was a 1965, but this doesn't seem to add up. He is asking $18,000.
I know there are a million things to be done first (VIN# review, check body, PPI, road test, etc.), but just to ball park it, is $18,000 even reasonable. I/we know nothing about 356's.
Thanks for the help!
FYI: I bought my '89 C4 this past summer. My Father-in-Law (Tom's brother) bought a '05 Boxter S three months later. Now Tom is looking. The Porsche bug has bitten this family!

Unless it's a rusted out basket case, 18K is practically giving it away. Decent C cabs are high 40s and up (and up). B's aren't far behind.
I'm sure you are aware that you can spend way more than the purchase price on restoring it or just fixing it up to be a good reliable driver.
Post some pics and more info when you can.......

OH PEDRO......Did you have to do that??????
I was sitting in that car about an hour before this happened. It was absolutely lickable! Just your basic 200K Speedster.
This didn't have to happen, but it did, and it made me and several others physically sick. I still wanna puke when I see it.

Definitely a sad day Robert...that train did hit the whole 356 world...if you check the picture of the black Speedster upside down, you can really tell how clean this car was...I wonder whether or not any of these cars were restored after being totalled...

a few years ago, after a very big porsche event in southern california called the ventura auto fest (ie.. an event where anyone and everyone in the porsche scene in so cal is there.. lots of porsches), a semi hauling 3 very valuable and extremely fresh (just finished) and perfectly restored speedsters got stuck on a railroad crossing. the truck bottomed out, and before anyone w/ the train could be warned, tradgedy struck.
for more pics and details of this grusome event see:

RJT can give better details. Both Robert and JoAnne were at the auto fest and saw these immaculate cars 1st hand (and even sat in them) at the show before they met their fate.
