I am looking at a 1961 356. What is the best place to look up the VIN and get the history about the car?

There are a lot friends in the 356 Registry and a real willingness to help in most all areas. Join if you have not done so yet. Mike

If you post a VIN here, we'll try to help. If you end up owning a 356, you won't need much encouragement to join the Registry. happy hunting!

I was wondering about the Pre A cars. My engine isn't original, I know that, but the aluminum hinge cover plate matches the stamped VIN on the front bulkhead. I've also found the last two numbers of the VIN written in white chalk/crayon on the back of the dash and stamped into the aluminum spacer plates at either end of the dash. (As though the person fitting the interior marked them so that nobody would grab them from his bench after they were fitted to the car and use them on another.)

Are there any other places where the full or partial VIN might be located?

Any help would be a big . . . help!

Thanks,

TC

TC, I am not familiar w/ the practices during the pre-A years, but I'll offer this...
- practices then weren't as consistent as they later became, by the C era & of course the 911.
- the removable body parts (doors, engine hood, trunk lid, even bumpers) were pre-fitted prior to final painting, so those items were often marked w/ the last 2 digits of the serial # to refit after.
- on my '59 & '65, the latch plates of the trunk lid has those last 2 digits stamped on it.
- the hinges of the trunk lid sometimes has those #s stamped.
- this is a great question for a pre-A expert &/or the 356 Registry "talk" list.
good luck (& keep inspecting...)

Can't say much for Pre-A's, but here's a link to a great site showing all the places a serial number shows up in 1959. It's an amazing list (from the Convertible D website). http://www.convertibledregistry.com/...NnumPlaces.pdf
